Overview

Function is said to be the central idea in the study of mathematics. In many situations,
there is a mathematical function in which one quantity corresponds to another quantity
according to some definite rule. Physical situations and number patterns can be represented
by tables, graphs, verbal rules, and equations where their interrelationships can be studied
and analyzed.

Module Content

This module contains the following lessons:

LESSON 1: RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS

LESSON 2: ONE-TO-ONE AND INVERSE OF FUNCTIONS
LESSON 3: GRAPHS OF INVERSE FUNCTIONS

Lesson
Relations and Functions
1

What’s In

In the previous studies, a relation was defined as a correspondence between two

variables, x(or any variables/letters) and y (or any variables/letters), or as a set of ordered
pairs (𝒙𝒙, 𝒚𝒚) where x is related to y. A function is represented by a set of ordered pairs or a
correspondence that associates with each element of x a unique element of y. In an ordered
pairs (𝒙𝒙, 𝒚𝒚), the first element x is called the domain and the second element y is called the
range.

Definition

Relation: A relation is a set of ordered pairs.

Function: A relation is a function if and only if each element of the domain is paired with
exactly one element of the range.

Functions in a Real World

In the real world, there are situations that can be represented by two variable
quantities related in such a way that one variable depends upon another variable. In other
words, the quantity or a variable y depends upon the quantity or variable x.

EXAMPLE

Relate the variables into function to the following statements.

1. The price of plot of land is related to the number of square meters of the land bought.
Relate into function: The price of plot of land(y) is a function to the number of square
meters of the land bought(x).

2. The monthly salary of an employee is related to the number of days the employee
work.
Relate into function: The monthly salary(y) of an employee is a function to the number
of days the employee work(x).

3. The water bill paid for the month is related to the number of cubic meters of the water
consumed.
Relate into function: The water bill paid for the month(y) is a function to the number of
cubic meters of the water consumed(x).

4
If the amount of water consumed for the month is known (in example no. 3), the water
bill can be predicted by using the rule:
y = basic charge (x) where x represents the amount of water consumed and y represents
the total charge(bill). If the basic charge per cubic meter is P50.00
The rule is y = 50(x) or f(x) = 50x

Lesson One-to-One and Inverse of
2 Functions

What’s In
The inverse of a set of ordered pairs contains the inverse of each of the individual
ordered pairs of the set. If x and y are interchanged in the original equation, the resulting
graph is the reflection of the original graph. The inverse of that function can be defined
by interchanging x and y in the original equation. Note that not all function has inverses.
The definition of inverse function requires that both functions and that each of them
must be one-to-one.

Definition
One-to-one Function: A function is a one-to-one function if and only if each element
of the range is paired with exactly one element of the domain.
Inverse function: A function f has an inverse function f -1 if and only if f is one-to-
one.
Inverse function: Two functions f and g are inverses of each other if
f(g(x)) = x for all x in the domain of g and
g(f(x)) = x for all x in the domain of f.
The inverse function of f is denoted by f -1 (read as “f-inverse”).
Let’s get some practice here!
EXAMPLE 1
Determine the inverse of the following set of one-to-one ordered pairs.
a. {(1,4),(2,5),(5,8)(-1,2)}

b. {(1,-4),(5,0),(8,3),(10,5)}

b. {(-4,1),(0,5),(3,8),(5,10)}

student is mapped exactly to one ID number.

EXAMPLE 2
Let f(x)=x+2. Is the inverse of f a function? If so, give it defining equation and rewrite
into its inverse.

Solution: The defining equation can be derived by interchanging x and y in the

original equation: f(x)=x+2 or y=x+2, interchange x and y from the original equation,
x=y+2, so x-2=y or y=x-2 then write it in a function form f(x)=x-2

8
SOLUTION Yes
Defining equation: y=x-2

The inverse of f(x)=x+2 is f -1(x) = x-2

EXAMPLE 3
Determine the inverse of f(x)=2x+5
SOLUTION
Rewrite the function form into equation and interchange the x and y

from the original equation Interchange x and y

f(x)=2x+5

y = 2x+5 x = 2y+5 x-
5 = 2y
𝑥𝑥−5
Answer: f -1(x) = 2

Lesson Graphs of Inverse of Functions
3

What’s In

Relationships between quantities can be represented by a table of values, by

ordered pairs of numbers, by an equation, and by a graph in two variables. In the
previous lesson we already discussed function as in a form of defining equation and by
ordered pairs.
If x and y are interchanged in the original equation, the resulting graph f –1 (x)
(red) is the reflection of the original graph f(x) (blue) about another line, y = x.

𝑥𝑥+3
f(x)= = {(1,2),(3,3),(5,4),(-1,1),(-3,0)}
2

f –1 (x)=2x – 3 = {(2,1)(3,3),(4,5),(1,-1),(0,-3)}

y=x

Ordered pairs of numbers represent points, and therefore can be plotted in the
coordinate plane. These points determine the shape of the function described.

Definition
Graphing inverse functions: Given the graph of a one-to-one function, the
graph of its inverse can be obtained by reflecting the graph about the line y = x.

A set of points in a coordinate plane is the graph of a function if and only if no

vertical line intersects the graph at more than one point.

Example 1. Given the set of ordered pairs f(x) = {(-2,-4),(-1,-2),(0,0),(1,2),(2,4)} of a
