Sum and Difference of Two Binomials and the Square of a Binomial!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing

LESSON

You have already learned how to use FOIL (First-Outer-Inner-Last) Method in

multiplying two binomials. What have you observed when you multiply two
binomials with like terms like (a + b)(a − b), (a + b)(a + b) and (a − b)(a − b)? How do
you call these expressions?

Let us find the product of these binomials using the FOIL Method.

F O I L

1. ( a + b ) ( a – b ) = 𝑎2 − 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏𝑎 − 𝑏2

= 𝒂𝟐 − 𝒃𝟐

2. ( a + b ) ( a + b ) = 𝑎2 + 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏𝑎 + 𝑏2

= 𝒂𝟐 + 𝟐𝒂𝒃 + 𝒃𝟐

3. ( a - b ) ( a - b ) = 𝑎2 − 𝑎𝑏 − 𝑏𝑎 + (−𝑏)2
= 𝒂𝟐 − 𝟐𝒂𝒃 + 𝒃𝟐

The answers in the given binomials gave us patterns. To see more clearly the
concept of these terms, let us examine these diagrams.

Diagram 1. Assume a > b.

a

In the diagram, we let a to be the length of

a 𝑎 2 the side of the square. Therefore, the area is a2.

Let’s take a small square from the large square with b as the length of the side.
Therefore, the area of the small square is b2.

a a

a-b a-b
a 𝑎2 𝑎2 - b2
a

b2 b

b
The area of the new figure is now a2 - b2.
Sliding down the small shaded rectangle on the top right, the figure clearly shows
that 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2 can become (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏).

a Therefore, (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏) = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2 .
𝑎2 - b2
a+b

The expression (a+b)(a-b) is called the sum and

difference of two binomials.
b

a-b

The diagram below will help you know the pattern in squaring the sum of binomial.
Diagram 2.

a+b
a b

a b b
a a2 ab
a+b

b
a a2 a ab a ab
b ab b2 b2

The expression (a+b)(a+b) can be written in a single binomial by using the law
of exponents. It is similar to (a+b)2.

From the figure, the biggest square has an area of a2.

The two rectangles has an area of ab. By adding these areas make 2ab.
And the smallest square has an area of b2.
These give us an expression of 𝑎2 + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 .
Therefore, (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 = 𝑎2 + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 .

Now let us see the result when we square the binomial difference a – b using the
diagram below. a

a-b
Diagram 3. b

(a-b)2
a-b

a ab

b b(a-b)
a b

= a a2 – a ab –

ab-b2
(a-b)2 a-b

The biggest square has an area of a2.

The bigger rectangle has an area of ab.
The smallest rectangle has an area of ab - b2.
Remove the area of the bigger and smallest rectangles to remain the area of the
smaller square with the expression (a – b)2.
The figures will give us an expression of a2 – (ab) – (ab - b2).
Simplifying this expression will gives us a2 – 2ab + b2.
Therefore, (a – b)2 = a2 – 2ab + b2.

The expressions (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 and (𝑎 − 𝑏)2 are called the square of binomials.
From the three diagrams presented earlier or by using FOIL Method, the results will
give us the following rules:

PRODUCT OF THE SUM AND DIFFERENCE OF TWO TERMS

( 𝒂 + 𝒃 )( 𝒂 − 𝒃 ) = 𝒂𝟐 − 𝒃𝟐

(sum of two numbers)(their difference) = (first number)2 – (second number)2

SQUARE OF A BINOMIAL

(𝒂 + 𝒃)𝟐 = 𝒂𝟐 + 𝟐𝒂𝒃 + 𝒃𝟐

(𝒂 − 𝒃)𝟐 = 𝒂𝟐 − 𝟐𝒂𝒃 + 𝒃𝟐

square of the first term

Note: The sign of the middle
term is positive in (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 .
twice the product of the two terms
The sign of the middle term
square of the last term is negative in (𝑎 − 𝑏)2 .

REFLECTION: (Journal Writing)

Patterns are everywhere! Even artists use patterns to

create beauty which we all admire for its balance.

Patterns are at the heart of mathematics. This subject has structures that
enable us to solve mathematical problems. Like the two lessons, the product of
the sum and difference of binomials and the square of binomials had shown you
patterns to solve the problems at once.
How useful are patterns to you as a student? Share your thoughts in
3-5 sentences and write these in your notebook.
