RECAP
The previous lessons taught you how to find the product of the sum and
difference of binomials and the square of a binomial using patterns and FOIL method.
Let’s recall these lessons by answering the following problems.

A. Which of the following mathematical statements are correct?

1. (𝑥 − 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦) = 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 6. (2𝑥 + 4𝑦)2 = 4𝑥 2 − 16𝑥𝑦 + 16𝑦 2
2. (2𝑥 + 4𝑦)(2𝑥 − 4𝑦) = 4𝑥 2 − 8𝑦 2 7. (5𝑥 − 4𝑦)(5𝑥 + 4𝑦) = 10𝑥 2 − 8𝑦 2
3. (𝑥 − 𝑦)2 = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 8. (2𝑥 + 4𝑦)2 = 4𝑥 2 + 16𝑦 2
4. (𝑥 + 𝑦)2 = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 9. (2𝑥 − 4𝑦)2 = 4𝑥 2 − 16𝑦 2
5. (2𝑥 − 4𝑦)2 = 4𝑥 2 − 16𝑥𝑦 + 16𝑦 2 10. (6𝑎𝑏 − 8)(6𝑎𝑏 + 8) = 36𝑎2 𝑏 2 − 64

B. Find the product of the following.

1. (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 + 𝑏)

4. (𝑎 − 𝑏)2 (𝑎 − 𝑏)

LESSON

You have squared a binomial and used this knowledge in solving the area of
the square.

Have you tried multiplying a binomial three times by itself? This is equal to
cube of a binomial.

In this lesson, let us use our knowledge about the volume of a cube in
discussing the cube of a binomial
a b
b

a
b
Take a look at the diagram of a cube above. The edges of the cube are each a + b in
length. Therefore, the volume of the cube is (𝒂 + 𝒃)(𝒂 + 𝒃)(𝒂 + 𝒃) or (𝒂 + 𝒃)𝟑 .
If the cube is made up of detachable blocks, then we can dismantle it.
Below are the pieces of blocks that made up the cube.

G H

List the dimension of every block and find its volume. Then, add the volume
of the cube.

Solution:

Block Dimension Volume

A a, b, b 𝑎𝑏 2
B a, a, b 𝑎2 𝑏
C b, b, b 𝑏3
D a, b, b 𝑎𝑏 2
E a, a, b 𝑎2 𝑏
F a, a, a 𝑎3
G a, b, b 𝑎𝑏 2
H a, a, b 𝑎2 𝑏
Total: 𝒂𝟑 + 𝟑𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 + 𝒃𝟑

The total volume of the eight blocks is 𝑎3 + 3𝑎2 𝑏 + 3𝑎𝑏 2 + 𝑏 3 .

Therefore,

a
a

(𝑎 + 𝑏)3 = 𝑎F
3
+ 𝟑𝑎2 𝑏 + 𝟑𝑎𝑏 2 + 𝑏3

The expression (𝑎 + 𝑏)3 can be expressed as (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 (𝑎 + 𝑏) because of the Law

of Exponents.
By performing the multiplication, we get
(𝑎 + 𝑏)3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 (𝑎 + 𝑏)

= (𝑎2 + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 )(𝑎 + 𝑏) Squaring the binomial

= 𝑎3 + 2𝑎2 𝑏 + 𝑎𝑏 2 + 𝑎2 𝑏 + 2𝑎𝑏 2 + 𝑏 3 Distributive Property

(𝑎 + 𝑏)3 = 𝒂𝟑 + 𝟑𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 + 𝒃𝟑 Combining similar terms

To craft a rule for finding the cube of a binomial, try to answer the following
questions. Notice that the cube of a binomial (𝑎 + 𝑏)3 is the sum of four terms.

1. How do you obtain the first term in the answer?

2. What is the constant term that you multiply in the second term of the answer?
What do you do with the first term of the binomial? How about the second
term of the binomial?
3. What is the constant term that you multiply in the third term of the answer?
What do you do with the first term of the binomial? How about the second
term of the binomial?
4. How do you obtain the fourth term in the answer?

Solution:

1. The first term in the answer is the cube of the first term of the binomial.
2. The second term in the answer is always multiplied by 3. The first term of the
binomial is squared then multiplied by the second term.
3. The third term in the answer is always multiplied by 3. The first term of the
binomial is multiplied by the square of the second term.
4. The fourth term in the answer is the cube of the second term of the binomial.
Example:

Using the pattern of the first diagram, find the volume of the cube below.

Solution:
𝑉 = 𝑒3 2 + 3𝑥
𝑉 = (2 + 3𝑥)3
= 23 + 3(2)2 (3𝑥) + 3(2)(3𝑥)2 + (3𝑥)3 2 + 3𝑥

= 𝟖 + 𝟑𝟔𝒙 + 𝟓𝟒𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝟕𝒙𝟑 2 + 3𝑥

More Examples:
Let us solve the following by applying the rules of the cube of binomials.

1. Find the product of (𝑎 − 𝑏)3 .

Solution:

(𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = (𝑎)3 + 3(𝑎)2 (−𝑏) + 3(𝑎)(−𝑏)2 + (−𝑏)3

= 𝒂𝟑 − 𝟑𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 −𝒃𝟑

2. Find the product of (2𝑎 + 3𝑏)3 .

Solution:
(2𝑎 + 3𝑏)3 = (2𝑎)3 + 3(2𝑎)2 (3𝑏) + 3(2𝑎)(3𝑏)2 + (3𝑏)3
= 𝟖𝒂𝟑 + 𝟑𝟔𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟓𝟒𝒂𝒃𝟐 + 𝟐𝟕𝒃𝟑
3. Find the product of (2𝑎 − 3𝑏)3 .
Solution:
(2𝑎 − 3𝑏)3 = (2𝑎)3 + 3(2𝑎)2 (−3𝑏) + 3(2𝑎)(−3𝑏)2 + (−3𝑏)3
= 𝟖𝒂𝟑 − 𝟑𝟔𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟓𝟒𝒂𝒃𝟐 − 𝟐𝟕𝒃𝟑
4. Find the product of (2𝑥 2 + 𝑦 3 )3 .
Solution:
(2𝑥 2 + 𝑦 3 )3 = (2𝑥 2 )3 + 3(2𝑥 2 )2 (𝑦 3 ) + 3(2𝑥 2 )(𝑦 3 )2 + (𝑦 3 )3
= 𝟖𝒙𝟔 + 𝟏𝟐𝒙𝟒 𝒚𝟑 + 𝟔𝒙𝟐 𝒚𝟔 + 𝒚𝟗
5. Find the product of (2𝑥 2 − 𝑦 3 )3 .
Solution:
(2𝑥 2 − 𝑦 3 )3 = (2𝑥 2 )3 + 3(2𝑥 2 )2 (−𝑦 3 ) + 3(2𝑥 2 )(−𝑦 3 )2 + (−𝑦 3 )3
= 𝟖𝒙𝟔 − 𝟏𝟐𝒙𝟒 𝒚𝟑 + 𝟔𝒙𝟐 𝒚𝟔 − 𝒚𝟗

Notice the answers in the sum of the cube of binomial and the difference of
the cube of binomial. The cube of binomial in the form of (𝑎 + 𝑏)3 has positive terms
in the answer. While the cube of binomial in the form of (𝑎 − 𝑏)3 has two negative
terms in the answer particularly the second and last terms.

To help your calculations easier in cubing a binomial, remember the pattern below.

Cube of a Binomial Pattern

For all numbers a and b:

First term: the cube of a

Second term: three times the product of 𝑎2 and b
Third term: three times the product of a and 𝑏 2
Fourth term: the cube of b

(𝑎 + 𝑏)3 = 𝒂𝟑 + 𝟑𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 + 𝒃𝟑 (𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = 𝒂𝟑 − 𝟑𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 −𝒃𝟑

VALUING

REFLECTION: (Journal Writing)

We are living in a three-dimensional world and

shapes exist in our 3D world, too. One example of a 3D
shape is the cube. Cube is a box-shaped solid object that
has six identical square faces.
There are many uses for cubes in our every day life.
Draw something cube and tell its relevance to you and or
to the world.
