Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Properties of

Operation on the Set of Integers!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

LESSON

In this self-learning module lesson, we will be exploring the different

properties of addition and multiplication on the set of integers. You will also learn
how to illustrate each property. Enough examples and exercise are presented to
facilitate learning.

Read and analyze the following problems.

1. Last June 5, 2020, the Department of Health reported that there are 168 newly
cases of COVID-19 and 76 late cases of COVID-19 infected. What is the total
number of reported individuals infected by COVID 19?
Solution: 168 + 76 = 244
Therefore, there are 244 reported infected individuals by COVID-19.
2. The dimensions (lwh) of the box containing medicines are 10 inches, 8 inches and
6 inches respectively. Solve for the volume of the box. (V = lwh)
Solution: V = (10) (8) (6)
= 80 (6)
V = 480 The volume of the box is 480 cubic inches.
The above 2 problems illustrate some properties of operations on the set of
integers.
Properties of Operations for the Set of Integers:

1. Closure Property
Addition: The sum of two integers is also an integer.
Examples: A. 168 + 76 = 244 168, 76 and 244 are integers
B. – 12 + 6 = –6 – 12, 6 and – 6 are integers

Multiplication: The product of two integers is also an integer.

Examples: A. (9) (8) = 72 9, 8 and 72 are integers
B. (13) (–5) = –65 13, – 5 and – 65 are integers
2. Commutative Property
Addition: States that changing the order of addends does not affect the sum.
Examples: A. 20 + 36 = 36 + 20
56 = 56
B. 15 + (–75) = –75 + 15
–60 = –60
Multiplication: States that changing the order of factors does not affect the
product.
Examples: A. (– 8) ( – 15) = (– 15) ( x – 8)
120 = 120

B. (12) (– 4) = (– 4) (12)
– 48 = – 48
3. Associative Property
Addition: States that changing the groupings of addends does not affect the sum.
Examples: A. (20 + 13) + – 8 = 20 + (13 + – 8)
33 + –8 = 20 + 5
25 = 25

B. (70 + –20)+ –100 = 70 + (– 20 + –100)

50 + –100 = 70 + – 120
– 50 = – 50
Multiplication: States that changing the groupings of factors does not affect the
product.
Examples: A. (10 x 8) x 6 = 10 x (8 x 6)
80 x 6 = 10 x 48
480 = 480

B. (– 9 x 5) x 2 = – 9 x (5 x 2)
– 45 x 2 = – 9 x 10
– 90 = – 90
4. Identity Property
Addition: States that any integer added to 0 or 0 added to any integer equals the
integer. 0 is the identity element for addition.
Examples: A. 79 + 0 = 79
B. 0 + – 130 = – 130
Multiplication: States that any integer multiplied by 1 or 1 multiplied to any
integer equals the integer. 1 is the identity element for multiplication.
Examples: A. – 80 x 1 = – 80
B. 1 x 500 = 500
5. Inverse Property
Addition: States the any integer added to its opposite or additive inverse equals 0.
Examples: A. – 9 + 9 = 0
B. 78 + –78 = 0
Multiplication: States that any integer multiplied by its reciprocal or multiplicative
inverse equals 1.
1
Examples: A. (18) ( 18
) = 1
1
B. (– 50
) ( –50) = 1

6. Distributive Property of multiplication over addition states that the product

of an integer and the sum of two integers is equal to the sum of the two products.
Examples: A. 8 (10 + 7) = (8)(10) + (8)(7)
8 (17) = 80 + 56
136 = 136
B. – 12(20 + – 3) = – 12(20) + – 12(– 3)
– 12 (17) = – 240 + 36
– 204 = – 204
