LESSON

Product of Two Binomials

In the previous lesson we showed you how to multiply binomials using

different methods. The FOIL method is usually the quickest method for multiplying
two binomials.

Binomials are fun to work with in Mathematics, because they take on many
patterns when we combine them together using various operations.

Remember that when we multiply a binomial by a binomial we get four terms.

Sometimes we can combine like terms to get a trinomial, but sometimes there are no
like terms to combine.

Let’s try to find the product of these binomials using the FOIL Method.

F O I L
1. (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 2) = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 𝑥 + 2 Remember….
= 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐 FOIL reminds you to
multiply the:

F O I L First terms
Outer terms
2. (2𝑥 + 3)(2𝑥 + 5) = 2
4𝑥 + 10𝑥 + 6𝑥 + 15
Inner terms
= 𝟒𝒙𝟐 + 𝟏𝟔𝒙 + 𝟏𝟓 Last terms

F O I L
3. (5𝑥 − 2𝑦)(5𝑥 − 4𝑦) = 25𝑥 2 − 20𝑥𝑦 − 10𝑥𝑦 + 8𝑦 2
= 𝟐𝟓𝒙𝟐 − 𝟑𝟎𝒙𝒚 + 𝟖𝒚𝟐

Notice that the given binomials are like terms and the products that we got
are trinomials which gave us the following patterns.
Product of Two Binomials

(𝑿 + 𝑨)(𝑿 + 𝑩) = 𝑿𝟐 + (𝑨 + 𝑩)𝑿 + 𝑨𝑩

To get the first term,

square the first term.

To get the middle term,

multiply the sum of the last terms
in each binomial by the first term.

To get the last term,

multiply together the last terms in each
binomial.

The product of two binomials is always a trinomial. The FOIL method is

applied to solve this kind of special product.

Examples:
Multiply using the pattern (𝑋 + 𝐴)(𝑋 + 𝐵)
1. (2𝑦 + 1)(2𝑦 + 7)

Solution: 𝑋 = 2𝑦, 𝐴 = 1, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = 7

(𝑿 + 𝑨)(𝑿 + 𝑩) = 𝑿𝟐 + (𝑨 + 𝑩)𝑿 + 𝑨𝑩

(2𝑦 + 1)(2𝑦 + 7) = (2𝑦)2 + (1 + 7)2𝑦 + (1)(7)

= 4𝑦 2 + (8)2𝑦 + 7

= 𝟒𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏𝟔𝒚 + 𝟕

2. (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 5)

Solution: 𝑋 = 𝑥, 𝐴 = 3, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = −5

(𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 5) = 𝑥 2 + [3 + (−5)]𝑥 + (3)(−5)

= 𝑥 2 + (−2)𝑥 + (−15)

= 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏𝟓

3. (3𝑥 + 2𝑦)(3𝑥 + 5𝑦)

Solution: 𝑋 = 3𝑥, 𝐴 = 2𝑦, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = 5𝑦

(3𝑥 + 2𝑦)(3𝑥 + 5𝑦) = (3𝑥)2 + (2𝑦 + 5𝑦)3𝑥 + (2𝑦)(5𝑦)

= 9𝑥 2 + (7𝑦)3𝑥 + 10𝑦 2
= 𝟗𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝟏𝒙𝒚 + 𝟏𝟎𝒚𝟐

4. (𝑎𝑏 2 − 7)(𝑎𝑏 2 − 6)
2
Solution: 𝑋 = 𝑎𝑏 , 𝐴 = −7, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = −6

(𝑎𝑏 2 − 7)(𝑎𝑏 2 − 6) = (𝑎𝑏 2 )2 + [(−7) + (−6)]𝑎𝑏 2 + (−7)(−6)

= 𝑎2 𝑏 4 + (−13)𝑎𝑏 2 + 42

= 𝒂𝟐 𝒃𝟒 − 𝟏𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 + 𝟒𝟐

5. ( 𝑥 + 8) ( 𝑥 − 3)
2 2

Solution: 𝑋 = 𝑥, 𝐴 = 8, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = −3
2

( 𝑥 + 8) ( 𝑥 − 3) = ( 𝑥) + [(8 + (−3)] 𝑥 + (8)(−3)
