Self-Learning Module 5
Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Evaluating

Algebraic Expressions!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in this self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Evaluating

Algebraic Expressions!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

RECAP
You have already explored patterns and expressed them as relationships using
constants and variables. Can you still remember the important concepts in algebra
such as constants, variables, and algebraic expressions? How about polynomials?
How do you classify and determine its degree?

Let us recall this knowledge by completing the table below:

Polynomial Variable(s) Constant(s) Constant Degree of Kinds of

Term Polynomial Polynomial
−4𝑎2 𝑦
−8𝑥 + 10𝑥 6 + 4
2𝑥 5 − 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 − 5
−𝑥 3 𝑦 2 + 4𝑥

LESSON

An algebraic expression is meaningless until we determine its value or the

number it represents. In the algebraic expression 7𝑥 + 3, we know that x is a variable
and we can substitute any number for x. Once a number is substituted for x, then
the algebraic expression 7𝑥 + 3 will have a value. The process of replacing variables
with a given number (taken from the domain) appearing in an algebraic expression
and then simplifying the result is called evaluation.

Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

To evaluate an algebraic expression means to replace a variable by a given
value and perform the arithmetic operations. Remember the PEMDAS rule order of
operations in simplifying the expression: Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition and Subtraction.

Illustrative Examples:

Evaluate.

1. 7𝑥, for 𝑥 = 2

[Solution] 7𝑥 = 7(2) Replace x with 2.

= 14 Perform the operation.

2. 7𝑥 + 3, for 𝑥 = 4

[Solution] 7𝑥 + 3 = 7(4) + 3 Replace x with 4.

= 28 + 3 Perform the operation.

= 31

3. 2𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 5, for 𝑥 = −2

[Solution] 2𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 5 = 2(−2)2 − 3(−2) + 5 Replace x with -2.

= 2(4) + 6 + 5 Perform the operations.

= 19
𝑦2
4. − 3𝑦 + 1, for 𝑦 = 0
2

𝑦2 02
[Solution] − 3𝑦 + 1 = − 3(0) + 1 Substitute the value of y=0.
2 2

=0−0+1 Perform the operation.

=1

5. 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥𝑦 + 5𝑦 2 , for 𝑥 = 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = −1

[Solution] 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥𝑦 + 5𝑦 2 = (3)2 − 3(3)(−1) + 5(−1)2 Substitute the value of x = 3

and y = −1.

= 9 + 9 + 5(1) Perform the operations.

= 23

More Examples:

Weekly Wages

A cashier in a local supermarket is paid Php 350 each day

for an 8-hour shift. Each extra hour is paid Php 50. To compute
for the cashier’s salary for the week, the manager uses the
expression:

350𝑥 + 50𝑦

where x = the number of days worked in a week

and y = the number of extra hours.

Compute how much each of these cashiers will receive for the week.

a. Mawi if she worked for 5 days with 10 extra hours

b. Jocs if he worked for 4 days with 6 extra hours

Solution:

As you can see, the expression 350𝑥 + 50𝑦 is very useful for the manager as it
represents all possible weekly salaries of the cashiers employed by the supermarket.
Let us compute for the weekly salaries of Mawi and Jocs by substituting the values
of 𝑥 and 𝑦 in the expression:

a. Mawi: 𝑥 = 5, 𝑦 = 10 Jocs: 𝑥 = 4 𝑦 = 6

350𝑥 + 50𝑦 = 350(5) + 50(10) 350𝑥 + 50𝑦 = 350(4) + 50(6)

= 1750 + 500 = 1400 + 300
= 2250 = 1700

Therefore, Mawi’s salary for the Therefore, Joc’s salary for the
week is Php 2,250. week is Php 1,700.
