What This Module is About
Have you seen a map? Can you locate where the Philippines is? In this
module, you will discover how places are located by learning what is a rectangular
coordinate system and its different parts. You will also learn how points are plotted
on the Cartesian Plane and what are its uses in real life.

What I Know
Find out how much you already know about this module. Write the letter that
you think is the best answer to each question on a sheet of paper. Answer all items.
After taking and checking this short test, take note of the items that you were not able
to answer correctly and look for the right answer as you go through in this module.
1. Which of the following statements does not describe about the rectangular
coordinate system?
A. The horizontal axis is called the y-axis.
B. The axes divide the plane into four quadrants.
C. The point where the axes meet is called the origin.
D. It is named after the French Mathematician René Descartes.
2. The second coordinate of the given ordered pair (x, y) is called __________.
A. ordinate B. abscissa C. origin D. quadrant
iii
8. Which of the following is true about the points in Figure 1?
A. J is located in Quadrant III. C. C is located in Quadrant II.
B. B is located in Quadrant IV. D. G is located in Quadrant III.
10. Plot and label the points indicated by the coordinate pairs. A(1, -1), B(-4, 5).
A. C.
B. D.

Rectangular Coordinate
1 System
What’s In
In the next section, you will find out one of the applications of a number line.
What’s New
For example, you want to tell the location of the Student Center using the
map below. So, you say, the Student Center is located in column 2 of row B.
Therefore, it is located in grid section 2B. In which grid section is the Stadium? The
Stadium is in section 4D.

What Is It
2
This system is often called
the Cartesian coordinate system, named
after the French mathematician René
Descartes (1596–1650).The x- and y-axes
break the plane into four regions
called quadrants, named using Roman
Numerals I, II, III, and IV, as pictured. In
quadrant I, both coordinates are positive. In
quadrant II, the x-coordinate is negative
and the y-coordinate is positive. In quadrant
III, both coordinates are negative. In
quadrant IV, the x-coordinate is positive
and the y-coordinate is negative.
3
What’s More
Illustrative example 1:
Plot the ordered pair (−3, 5) and determine the quadrant which it lies.
Solution:
The ordered pair (−3, 5) is read as “the point negative three five” or just
“negative three five”. To plot the given ordered pair, you have to know the following
rules:
4. Label the point. You may omit the imaginary lines when your skills in plotting of
points have been developed.
4
Therefore, the point is located in the second quadrant.

Activity 4: Generalization
Summary
Let’s summarize. You have learned that:
2. Remember that the plane is divided into four quadrants. The signs of the first
and second coordinates of a point vary in the four quadrantsas indicated
below.
Quadrant I x > 0, or x is positive y > 0, or y is positive or (+, +);
Quadrant II x < 0, or x is negative y > 0, or y is positive or (–, +);
Quadrant III x < 0, or x is negative y < 0, or y is negative or (–, –);
Quadrant IV x > 0, or x is positive y < 0, or y is negative or (+, –).
6
3. The points which lie in the x-axis have coordinates (x, 0) and the points which
lie in the y-axis have coordinates (0, y), where x and y ∈ ℜ.
