Lesson
Rectangular Coordinate
1 System

What’s In

A number line composes of positive and negative number. It is away to

visually put numbers in order. Zero is found on the middle of the number line. It
extends infinitely. It goes on and on and on. On the left side of zero are negative
numbers. On the right side of the number line are positive numbers. We put a point
or a dot to locate a number on the line. The numbers on the number line in form of a
point are called as coordinates of number line.

In the next section, you will find out one of the applications of a number line.

What’s New

The rectangular coordinate system is also known as the Cartesian

coordinate system after Renè Descartes, who popularized its use in analytic
geometry. The rectangular coordinate system is based on a grid, and every point on
the plane can be identified by unique x and y coordinates, just as any point on the
Earth can be identified by giving its latitude and longitude.

Activity 1: Locate Me!

This activity will give you a clear picture of how to use the rectangular
coordinate system by telling its specific location.

For example, you want to tell the location of the Student Center using the
map below. So, you say, the Student Center is located in column 2 of row B.
Therefore, it is located in grid section 2B. In which grid section is the Stadium? The
Stadium is in section 4D.

1
https://bit.ly/2Bfvn6p

Use the map above to answer the following questions:

(a) Find the grid section of the Residence Halls.
(b) What is located in grid section 4C?

What Is It

The rectangular coordinate

system consists of two real number
lines that intersect at a right angle.
The horizontal number line is called
the x-axis, and the vertical number
line is called the y-axis. These two
number lines define a flat surface
called a plane, and each point on
this plane is associated with
an ordered pair of real numbers
(x, y). Ordered pair or coordinates
is a pair of numbers that locate a
point in the coordinate plane. The
first number of an ordered pair
corresponds to a number on the x-axis called the abscissa or x-coordinate. The
second number of the ordered pair corresponds to a number on the y-axis called
they-coordinate or ordinate. The intersection of the two axes is known as
the origin, which corresponds to the point (0, 0).

2
This system is often called
the Cartesian coordinate system, named
after the French mathematician René
Descartes (1596–1650).The x- and y-axes
break the plane into four regions
called quadrants, named using Roman
Numerals I, II, III, and IV, as pictured. In
quadrant I, both coordinates are positive. In
quadrant II, the x-coordinate is negative
and the y-coordinate is positive. In quadrant
III, both coordinates are negative. In
quadrant IV, the x-coordinate is positive
and the y-coordinate is negative.

An ordered pair (x, y) represents the

position of a point relative to the origin. The x-
coordinate represents a position to the right of
the origin if it is positive and to the left of the
origin if it is negative. The y-coordinate
represents a position above the origin if it is
positive and below the origin if it is negative.
Using this system, every position (point) in the
plane is uniquely identified. For example, the
ordered pair (2, 3) denotes the position
relative to the origin as shown in the figure at
the right.

Illustrated below is a Rectangular Coordinate System.

3
What’s More

Illustrative example 1:
Plot the ordered pair (−3, 5) and determine the quadrant which it lies.

Solution:
The ordered pair (−3, 5) is read as “the point negative three five” or just
“negative three five”. To plot the given ordered pair, you have to know the following
rules:

1. Locate the x-coordinate −3 along the x-axis

which is 3 units to the left from the origin and
then draw an imaginary line parallel to the y-
axis thru −3.

2. Locate the y-coordinate 5 along the y-axis

which is 5 units above from the origin and
then draw an imaginary line parallel to the x-
axis thru 5.

3. Mark the intersection of the two imaginary

https://bit.ly/3eHQMDU
lines with a dot. That dot is already your
point with coordinates (-3, 5).

4. Label the point. You may omit the imaginary lines when your skills in plotting of
points have been developed.

4
Therefore, the point is located in the second quadrant.

Activity 2: Identify and Plot Me!

Draw a Cartesian plane. Plot and label the following points.

1. (4,0) 2. (−6,0) 3.(0,3) 4.(–2,6) 5.(–4,−6)

Activity 3: Locate the Object!

How do you think can we apply rectangular coordinate system in real life? This
activity will enable you to give the coordinates of the point where the object is
located.
Direction: Describe the location of each point below by the completing the following
table. An example is done for you.

Summary
Let’s summarize. You have learned that:

1. To illustrate rectangular coordinate system we need to draw the Cartesian

plane is composed of two perpendicular number lines. The horizontal number
line is called the x-axis and we label it with the letter x. The vertical number
line is called the y-axis and we label it with the letter y.

2. Remember that the plane is divided into four quadrants. The signs of the first
and second coordinates of a point vary in the four quadrantsas indicated
below.
Quadrant I x > 0, or x is positive y > 0, or y is positive or (+, +);
Quadrant II x < 0, or x is negative y > 0, or y is positive or (–, +);
Quadrant III x < 0, or x is negative y < 0, or y is negative or (–, –);
Quadrant IV x > 0, or x is positive y < 0, or y is negative or (+, –).

6
3. The points which lie in the x-axis have coordinates (x, 0) and the points which
lie in the y-axis have coordinates (0, y), where x and y ∈ ℜ.

What I Can do

Activity 5: Let’s do this!
