Lesson Solving Quadratic Equation
1 by Extracting the Square
Roots
In this lesson you will learn how to solve quadratic equation by extracting the

square roots.

What’s In

Find the solution of each of the following quadratic equation.

1.) x2 =9

2.) r2 = 0

3.) w2 = -9

What’s New

Find the solutions of the quadratic equation x2 – 16 = 0 by extracting square roots.

Note: Quadratic equation can be written in the form x2 = k can be solved by applying the
following properties:
1. If k ¿ 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x = ± √ k .
2. If k = 0, then x2 = k has one real solution or root : x = 0 .
3. If k ¿ 0 , then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.
What is It

Example 1. Find the solutions of the quadratic equation x2 – 16 = 0 by extracting square

roots.

Solutions: Write the equation in the form x2 = k.

x2 – 16 = 0 Given equation
2
x - 16 + 16 = 0 + 16 Add 16 to both sides of the equation.
x2 = 16 Since 16 is greater than 0, then the first
property above can be applied to find the values
of x that will make the equation x2 – 16 = 0 true.

√ x 2=± √16 Extract the square root of both sides.

x = ±4
To check, substitute these values in the original equation.

For x = 4: For x = -4:

x2 – 16 = 0 x2 – 16 = 0
42 – 16¿ ? 0 42 – 16¿ ? 0
16 -16 =? 0 16 -16 =? 0
0=0 0=0

Both values of x satisfy the given equation. So the equation x2 – 16 = 0 is true when x = 4
or when x = -4.
Answer: The equation x2 – 16 = 0 has two solutions: x = 4 or x = -4.

Example 2. Solve the equation t2 = 0.

Since t2 equals 0, then the equation has only one solution.
That is, t = 0.
To check: t2 = 0.
02 =? 0
0=0
Answer : The equation t2 = 0. Has one solution: t = 0.
Example 3. Find the roots of the equation s2 + 9 = 0.
Solutions: Write the equation in the form x2 = k
s2 + 9 = 0 Given equation
2
s + 9 - 9 = 0 - 9. Add -9 to both sides of the equation.
s2 = -9
Since -9 is less than 0, then the equation s2 = -9 has no real solutions or roots.
There is no real number when squared gives -9.
Answer: The equation s2 + 9 = 0 has no real solutions or roots.

What’s More

Solve each of the following quadratic equation by extracting the square roots
1) 3t2 =12

2) x2 - 7 = 0

3) 3r2 = 0

4) x2 =150

9
5) x2 =
16

What I Have Learned

Solving Quadratic Equations by
2 Factoring
Factoring is the reverse process of multiplication. It is technique used in

solving quadratic equations.

What’s In

Factor each of the following polynomials:

Example : 1). 7 a3 - 14 a 4 + 35 a5

3 2
Solution : 7 a ( 1 – 2a + 5 a )

2). x 2−16

=(x–4)(+4)

1. 5x – 45

2. 3x + 6y

3. a 2−9

4. 81 x 2−64

5. y 2 +8 y +16

6. x 2−14 x +49

7. x 2+ 20 x +100

8. m2 + 2m + 1

9. x 2 - 6x + 9

10. 2 x − 8 x 2
What’s New

When a quadratic equation is written in standard form , ax 2 + bx + c = 0 , it may be

possible to factor the expression on the left side of the product of two first degree

polynomials. By setting each factor equal to 0 and solving the resulting linear equations,

the solutions of the quadratic equations are obtained.

The Zero – Product Property . If two real numbers have product of 0 , then at least

one of the numbers must be 0. That is , if ab = 0, then either a = 0 or b = 0 or both and b

are zero.

Here is how it works:

There are primarily three types of factoring

Common Monomial ab + ac = a ( b + c )

2
Difference of two squares x -9=(x+3)(x–3)

2
Quadratic trinomial x −5 x+ 6=( x−3 ) (x−2)
What is it
Example 1:

Solve : x 2 - x = 6

Solution :

Here are the steps you should follow:

1 Move all terms to the same side of the 2

x −x−6=0
equal sign , so the equation is set equal to This places the equation in standard

0. form

2 Factor the algebraic expression (x – 3 ) and 9 x + 2 ) are called

factors. These are factors of the

expression x 2−x−6=0.

3 Set each factor equal to 0. ( This process

is called the “ Zero – Product property”. If X–3=0;x+2=0

the product of two factors equals 0, then

either one or both of the of the factors

must be 0.)

4 Solve each resulting equation. X = 3 and x = - 2 are called the roots

of the quadratic equation

x 2−x−6=¿0.

Example 2.

Solve : x 2+ 3 x =0.

Solution:

Factor the common monomial. x(x+3)=0

Set each factor equal to 0 and solve for x. x=0 x + 3 = 0, x = -3

List all values of x. x = { 0, - 3 }

Example 3.

Solve : x 2 – 12=x .

Solution:

Get all the terms on the same side. x 2−12=x

2
Arrange the terms in standard form. x −x−12=0

Factor the quadratic trinomial. (x+3)(x–4)=0

Set all factor to 0 and solve for x. x + 3 = 0, x = -3 x – 4 = 0, x = 4

List all values of x. x={-3,4}

Example 4

x 144
Solve : = .
9 x

Solution:

Employ” product of the means = product of extremes” x • x = 144 •9

2
( cross- multiply ) for this proportion. x = 1296

2
Get all terms on the same side. x - 1296 = 0

Factor the difference of two squares. ( x + 36 ) ( x – 36 ) = 0

Set each equal to 0 and solve for x. x + 36= 0, x – 36 =

0,

x = - 36 x = 36

List all values of x. x = { - 36, 36 }

Example 5:

x +2 x −2
Solve : =
2 x +1 3

Solution:

Employ “ product of the means = product of the 3 ( x + 2 ) = ( 2x + 1 ) ( x – 2 )

Extremes. 3x + 6 = 2 x2 −3 x −2

Get all terms on the same side, then equate it to 0. 0 = 2 x2 −6 x−8

Factor the common monomial. 0 = 2 ( x 2−3 x−4 ¿

Factor the quadratic trinomial. 2(x–4)(x+1)=0

Set each factor equal to 0 and solve for x. 2 ≠ 0, x – 4 = 0,x = 4 x + 1 = 0, x =

-1

List all values of x. x={-1 ,4}

What’s More

Solve each quadratic equations by factoring:

Example ; x 2 - 5x + 6 = 0

2 2
(2) - 5( 2 ) + 6 = 0 (3) −5 ( 3 ) +6=0

4 – 10 + 6 = 0 9 – 15 + 6 = 0

Answer : The equation x2 - 4x + 2 = 0 has two solutions: x = 2 + √ 2 or x = 2 - √ 2

Example 2.: Find the solution of the equation x2 + 3x - 18 = 0 by completing the square.

Add 18 both sides of the equation then simplify

x2 + 3x - 18 = 0 → x2 + 3x – 18 + 18 = 0 + 18 →x2 + 3x = 18
Add to both sides of the equation the square of one-half of 3.
