1 Algebraic Expressions

In the earlier lessons, you were able to gain the knowledge about algebraic
expression and how to perform operations on these. Let us use the same knowledge
in order to solve problems involving algebraic expressions.

What’s In

Determine whether each statement is True or False.

1. The expression 4x + 3y is referred to as a sum.

2. The expression x2 + 4 is a product.

3. The expression (m - n) (m + n) is a product of a sum and difference.

4. If a = 3, then the value of 3a + 8 is -1.

5. The product of a + 4 and 7 is (a + 4)7.

6. In the polynomial 4x3 – 5x + 8, the coefficient of x is -5

7. A binomial always have a degree of 2.

8. The polynomial 3x2 – 6x + 8 is a trinomial.

9. (3 + 5)2 = 32 + 52

10. (x + 3) (x – 3) = x2 – 9

Consider the situation below.

Suppose your classmate was asked to square (3x – 4), he answered 9x2 – 16. Is your
classmate correct? If his answer is wrong, how will you plan to make him realize
that?

What is It

In order to solve problems involving algebraic expressions, it is important to follow


these steps:

1. ASKED: Analyze and understand the problem. Then, determine what is


asked.
2. GIVEN: Use the given numbers or information from the problem to come
up with a solution.
3. REPRESENT: Formulate useful expressions/equations relevant to the
problem.
4. SOLVE: Apply mathematical concepts.
5. CONCLUDE: Give the answer/solution to the problem.

Here are some examples:

1. The lengths of three logs are 3x + 5 meters, 4x – 1 meters, and 2x + 9 meters.


Find the sum of their lengths.

Solution:

ASKED: The sum of the lengths of the three logs

GIVEN: The lengths of three logs are 3x + 5 meters, 4x – 1 meters, and 2x + 9


meters.

REPRESENT: Length of the first log + length of the second log + length of third log
= sum of the logs

(3x + 5) + (4x – 1) + (2x + 9) = sum of the three logs

SOLVE: Adding these numbers,

(3x + 5) + (4x – 1) + (2x + 9) = 3x + 4x + 2x + 5 -1 + 9


= 8x + 13

CONCLUDE:

Therefore, the sum of the lengths of the three logs is 8x + 13 m.

2. The side of a square is 2x + 3 meters. What is its area?

Solution:

ASKED: The area of the square

GIVEN: The side of a square is 2x + 3 meters.

REPRESENT: Area of a square = side x side

Area of a square = (2x + 3) (2x + 3) or (2x + 3)2

SOLVE: Getting square of the side,

(2x + 3) (2x + 3) = (2x)2 + 2(2x)(3) + (3)2


= 4x2 + 12x + 9

CONCLUDE:

Therefore, the area of the square is 4x2 + 12x + 9 square units.

3. Cyrille adds his grades for the first grading period and obtains 18x2 + 39x + 18.
What is her average grade if she has 3x + 2 subjects?

Solution:

ASKED: Cyrille’s average grade

GIVEN: Cyrille’s total grades for the first grading period of his 3x + 2 subjects
is 18x2 + 39x + 18.

REPRESENT:
Total grades
Average grade =
Number of subjects

18𝑥 2 + 39x + 18
Average grade =
3𝑥 + 2

SOLVE: Diving these these numbers,

6x + 9

3x + 2 18x2 + 39x + 18
18x2 + 12x
27x + 18
27x + 18
0

CONCLUDE:

Therefore, Cyrille’s average grade is 6x + 9.

by 11𝑐 + 8𝑚 where 𝑐 is the number of candy canes Calvin eats for breakfast and 𝑚 is
the number of candy canes Melvin eats for breakfast. How many toys do they build
when Calvin eats 5 candy canes and Melvin eats 3 candy canes for breakfast?

2. The volume of the rectangular box is 12x3 + 25x2 + x – 2. The product of the length
and width of the box is 4x2 + 7x – 2. Find the height of the box.
