What’s In

Activity 1: Make It Perfect!!!

Determine a number that must be added to make each of the
following a perfect square trinomial. Explain how you arrived at your answer.

1. 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + ______
2. 𝑡𝑡 2 + 20𝑡𝑡 + ______
3. 𝑥𝑥 2 − 30𝑥𝑥 + ______
4. 𝑥𝑥 2 − 15𝑥𝑥 + ______
5. 𝑥𝑥 2 + 11𝑥𝑥 + ______

What’s New

Completing a Perfect Square Trinomial

If the first part of a perfect square trinomial is 𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏, then the
𝑏𝑏
entire perfect square trinomial is 𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + ( )2 . In words, the constant
2
term is the square of half the coefficient of 𝑥𝑥.

14
Another method of solving quadratic equations is by completing
the square. This method involves transforming the quadratic equation 𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝟐𝟐 +
𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃 + 𝒄𝒄 = 𝟎𝟎 into the form (𝒙𝒙 − 𝒉𝒉)𝟐𝟐 = 𝒌𝒌, where 𝒌𝒌 ≥ 𝟎𝟎. Can you tell why the
value of 𝒌𝒌 should be positive?

To solve the quadratic equation 𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝟐𝟐 + 𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃 + 𝒄𝒄 = 𝟎𝟎 by completing

the square, the following steps can be followed:
1. Divide both sides of the equation by 𝑎𝑎 then simplify.
2. Write the equation such that the terms with variables are on the left
side of the equation and the constant term is on the right side.
3. Add the square of one – half of the coefficient of 𝑥𝑥 on both sides of
the resulting equation. The left side of the equation becomes a perfect
square trinomial.
4. Express the perfect square trinomial on the left side of the equation as
a square of a binomial.
5. Solve the resulting quadratic equation by extracting the square root.
6. Solve the resulting linear equations.
7. Check the solutions obtained against the original equation.

What is It

(4) = 2 → 22 = 4
2

𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 + ____ = 𝟓𝟓 + _____

𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 + 𝟒𝟒 = 𝟓𝟓 + 𝟒𝟒
𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 + 𝟒𝟒 = 𝟗𝟗

Express 𝑥𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑥 + 4 as a square of a binomial.

𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 + 𝟒𝟒 = 𝟗𝟗
(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟐𝟐)𝟐𝟐 = 𝟗𝟗

Solve (𝑥𝑥 + 2)2 = 9 by extracting the square root.

(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟐𝟐)𝟐𝟐 = 𝟗𝟗

What’s New

The Quadratic Formula

For real numbers𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏, 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 𝑐𝑐, with 𝑎𝑎 ≠ 0, the solutions of the
quadratic equation 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + 𝑐𝑐𝟐𝟐= 0 are given by the Quadratic Formula
𝒙𝒙 = 𝟎𝟎𝟐𝟐
−𝒃𝒃 ± √𝒃𝒃 − 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒
𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐

If a quadratic equation is in the form 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + 𝑐𝑐 = 0, you can

Use the values of 𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏, and 𝑐𝑐 to find the solutions for the equation; that is, you
can find those values of 𝑥𝑥 that make the equation true by using the Quadratic
Formula:

Remember that ± is the easiest way to write the two solutions to

the equation. The formula actually means:

−𝒃𝒃+𝒃𝒃𝟐𝟐 −𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 −𝒃𝒃−𝒃𝒃𝟐𝟐 −𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒

𝒙𝒙 = 𝒐𝒐𝒐𝒐 𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐

Unless the quantity 𝑏𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 is negative or zero, the graph

of 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + 𝑐𝑐 = 𝑦𝑦 crosses the x – axis exactly two points.

What is It

Example 1.
Use the quadratic formula to solve 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 − 𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖 + 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 = 𝟎𝟎.

22
Solution:
Determine the values of 𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏, and 𝑐𝑐.
𝒂𝒂 = 𝟏𝟏; 𝒃𝒃 = −𝟖𝟖; 𝒄𝒄 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏
Substitute the values of 𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏, and 𝑐𝑐 in the quadratic formula.

−𝒃𝒃 ± √𝒃𝒃𝟐𝟐 − 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒

𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐
𝟖𝟖 ± (−𝟖𝟖)𝟐𝟐 − 𝟒𝟒(𝟏𝟏)(𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏)
𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐(𝟏𝟏)
Simplify the result.

𝟖𝟖 ± √𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔 − 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒
𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐

𝟖𝟖 ± √𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏
𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐

𝟖𝟖 ± 𝟒𝟒
𝒙𝒙 =
𝟐𝟐
𝟖𝟖+𝟒𝟒 𝟖𝟖−𝟒𝟒
Therefore, 𝒙𝒙𝟏𝟏 = and 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 =
𝟐𝟐 𝟐𝟐

𝒙𝒙𝟏𝟏 = 𝟔𝟔 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 = 𝟐𝟐
Check:
Substitute the roots 2 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 6 in the original equation, we have

If 𝑥𝑥 = 2, If 𝑥𝑥 = 6,
𝑥𝑥 2 − 8𝑥𝑥 + 12 = 0 𝑥𝑥 2 − 8𝑥𝑥 + 12 = 0
? ?
2 2
(2) − 8(2) + 12 =
⏞0 (6) − 8(6) + 12 =
⏞0
? ?
4 − 16 + 12 =
⏞0 36 − 48 + 12 =
⏞0
0=0 0=0

23
Both values of 𝑥𝑥 satisfy the given equation. So the equation
2
𝑥𝑥 − 8𝑥𝑥 + 12 = 0 is true when 𝑥𝑥 = 2 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑤𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 𝑥𝑥 = 6.
