What is It
Activity 3- Presentation
What is the correct order of operation?
Look at the number sentence below.
When performing arithmetic operations there can only be one correct answer. We
need a set of rules in order to avoid this kind of confusion. Mathematicians have
devised a standard order of operations for calculations involving more than one
arithmetic operation.

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside the parentheses.

Rule 2: Next, perform all multiplications and divisions that comes from left to right.

Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions that comes from left to right.

Example 1: Evaluate each expression using the rules for order of operations

Solution:

Order of Operations
Expression Evaluation Operation

=4+5x6 Multiplication
4+5x6 = 4 + 30 Addition
= 34

= 14 ÷ 7 - 2 Division
14 ÷ 7 - 2 =2-2 Subtraction
=0

= (35 - 20) x 3 Parentheses

(35 - 20) x 3 = 15 x 3 Multiplication
= 45

3
In Example 1, each problem involved only 2 operations. Let's look at some examples
that involve more than two operations.

Example 2: Evaluate 4 + 6 x (5 + 4) ÷ 3 - 7 using the order of operations.

Solution:

Step 1: 4 + 6 x (5 + 4) ÷ 3 - 7 = 4+6x9÷3-7 Parentheses

Step 2: 4+6x9÷3-7 = 4 + 54 ÷ 3 - 7 Multiplication

Step 3: 4 + 54 ÷ 3 - 7 = 4 + 18 - 7 Division

Step 4: 4 + 18 - 7 = 22 - 7 Addition

Step 5: 22 - 7 = 15 Subtraction

Example 3: Evaluate 8 - 6 ÷ (9 - 3) x 2 + 5 using the order of operations.

Solution:

Subtraction
Step 1: 8 - 6 ÷ (9 - 3) x 2 + 5 = 8-6÷6x2+5 inside
Parentheses

Step 2: 8-6÷6x2+5 = 8-1x2+5 Division

Step 3: 8-1x2+5 = 8-2+5 Multiplication

Step 4: 8-2+5 = 6+5 Subtraction

Step 5: 6+5 = 11 Addition

4
In Examples 2 and 3, you will notice that multiplication and division were evaluated
from left to right according to Rule 2. Similarly, addition and subtraction were evaluated
from left to right, according to Rule 3.

When two or more operations occur inside a set of parentheses, these operations
should be evaluated according to Rules 2 and 3.

Example 4: Evaluate 200 ÷ (4 + 9 x 4) - 5 using the order of operations.

Solution:

Multiplication
Step 1: 200 ÷ (4 + 9 x 4) - 5 = 200 ÷ (4 + 36) - 5 inside
Parentheses

Addition inside
Step 2: 200 ÷ (4 + 36) - 5 = 200 ÷ 40 - 5
Parentheses

Step 3: 200 ÷ 40 - 5 = 5-5 Division

Step 4: 5-5 = 0 Subtraction

Always remember that in order of operations, certain rules must be followed to arrive
at one specific answer. Here, the PMDAS/ GMDASRULE must be followed correctly
to get the right answer. The MDAS stands for the four basic of operations
(Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction). The rule says that: (1) multiply or
divide first in the order as they come from left to right. Then, (2) add or subtract in the
order as they come from left to right.
