Lesson Divide fraction by another fraction;
1 Whole number by simple fraction

Good day! Welcome in this module. I hope that you are in good health along with your
family. You are going to learn division of fraction in this module. You are expected to
finish the module in 3 days. Enjoy schooling at home!

What’s In

Reciprocal-is also referred to as “multiplicative inverse”

A fraction multiplied by its reciprocal is equal to 1.
Example: ¾ x (reciprocal)= 1
Thus; ¾ x 4/3 = 12/12 or 1.
Therefore, the reciprocal of ¾ is 4/3.
Reciprocals
If the product of two numbers is 1, the two numbers are reciprocals
of each other. Here are some examples: Study the table on how different
types of fractions were expressed in their reciprocals.
In each case, the original number, when multiplied by its reciprocal, equals 1.
In dividing fraction, we always change or rewrite the divisor into its reciprocal.

Original number Reciprocal Product

Notes to the Teacher
The learner will learn skills in dividing fractions. Constant guide
along learning the module is highly recommended.

What’s New

Initializing. . .

-What do you see in the picture?

-Did you receive relief goods too?

5
-How do you share your blessings to your neighbor?
-Why is it important to conserve food at all times?

Problem Opener 1:
The entire community of a Barangay needs 4/5 tons of rice for relief goods
distribution. Each truck can carry 1/5 tons of rice for delivery. How many trucks are
needed to deliver the rice for relief operation?

Let’s Solve the problem by following the steps.

Steps in dividing fraction by another fraction

➢ Write the reciprocal
➢ Multiply the numerators and then the denominators
➢ Simplify the answer to the lowest term
4 1
The number sentence for the problem should be, ÷5=𝑁
5
4 5
STEP 1: ÷1=𝑁
5
4 5 20
STEP 2: 𝑥1 =
5 5
20
STEP 3: 𝑜𝑟 4.
5

Therefore, there are 4 trucks needed to deliver the rice for relief operation.
Let us try now to divide whole number by simple fraction.
In dividing whole number by fraction you can use two methods. The first one
is by visualizing it and the other one is by computation following simple steps. Let
us discover.
Problem Opener 2:
A 4-meter stick is to be divided into shorter pieces for project in T.L.E. How
many pieces of sticks can be made if it will be cut into 1/3-meter-long piece of
stick?

Strategy 1: Visualizing
To represent 1 whole:

6
To represent the 4 meter stick we have this illustration.

How many thirds are there in a 4-meter stick?

1
Very good! There are 12 pieces of sticks meter long each.
3

Steps in dividing whole number by a fraction

➢ Rename the whole number as fraction. Remain the value
as numerator and 1 as denominator.
➢ Write the reciprocal of the divisor
➢ Multiply the numerators and then the denominators
➢ Simplify the answer to the lowest term

Strategy 2: Follow the steps

Divide mixed number
Lesson by fraction and vice-
versa

What is It

Now, you can continue learning division of fractions. It will be very easy for you to
proceed if you answered the questions in Brain Power activity.
The process of dividing mixed number by fraction is just the same with division of
simple fraction and whole number you just have to follow the steps for you to get the
correct way of dividing mixed number by a simple fractions and vice-versa. Let us
start.
Problem Opener 1:
Father has 3 ½ meters of plastic to cover the windows of his Sari-Sari Store
for protection for COVID-19. If each window needs ½ meters of plastic cover, how
many window covers can he make from his plastic cover?

Steps in dividing mixed number by a fraction

➢ Change the mixed number into improper fraction.
➢ Write the reciprocal of the divisor
➢ Multiply the numerators and then the denominators
➢ Simplify the answer to the lowest term

Let us solve the problem by following the steps.

1 1
The number sentence will be 3 ÷ =𝑁
2 2
7 1
STEP 1: ÷2=𝑁
