A mathematical system is make up of 3 components: set of elements; one or more


operations for combining the elements; one or more relations for comparing the
elements.
Postulate –is a statement accepted without proof.
Theorem is a statement accepted after it is proved deductively.
In Proving theorems, properties of Equality and Congruence are used as basis for
reasoning.

Triangle Congruence Postulates


SSS Congruence Postulate. If the three sides of one triangle are congruent to the
three sides of another triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.
SAS Congruence Postulate. If the two sides and an included angle of one triangle
are congruent to the two sides and an included angle of another triangle, then the
two triangles are congruent.
ASA Congruence Postulate. If the two angles and an included side of another tri-
angle are congruent to two angles and an included side of another triangle, then
the two triangles are congruent.

Congruence Theorems for Right Triangles


LL Congruence Theorem- If the two legs of one right triangle are congruent to the
two legs of another right triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.
LA Congruence Theorem- If a leg and an acute angle of one right triangle are
congruent to a leg and an acute angle of another right triangle, then the two
triangles are congruent.
Hy A Congruence Theorem- If the hypotenuse and an acute angle of one right
triangle are congruent to hypotenuse and an acute angle of another right triangle,
then the two triangles are congruent.
HyL Congruence Theorem. If the hypotenuse and a leg of one right triangle are
congruent to the hypotenuse and a leg of another right triangle, then the two
triangles are congruent.

Perpendicular bisector is a line, ray or segment that divides a line, ray or segment
into two congruent parts and at the same time forms a right angle.
An angle bisector is a line, ray or segment that divides an angle into two congru-
ent angles.
Isosceles Triangle is a triangle whose legs and base angles are congruent.
Isosceles Triangle Theorem: If the 2 sides of a triangle are congruent, then the
angles opposite these sides are congruent .
