Public Opinion Strategies conducted a statewide telephone survey in South Dakota on a public policy issue.
This memo releases one question from the survey, which was conducted June 27-30, 2020 among five hundred

registered voters in the state. Half of the interviews (N=250) were conducted with cell phone respondents. The
survey has a margin of error of +4.38% in 95 out of 100 cases.

1. Kristi Noem has an impressive job rating with South Dakota voters.

We asked respondents:
“Do you approve or disapprove of the job Kristi Noem is doing as governor?”

Fully 62% approve and 32% disapprove. By intensity, 39% strongly approve and 23% somewhat

approve. Only 19% strongly disapprove, while another 13% somewhat disapprove. The remaining 6%
said they did not know.

• The Governor’s approval rating hits 89% approve/7% disapprove with Republicans, 48% approve/43%
disapprove with Independents, and 26% approve/68% disapprove with Democrats.
• Noem has majority approve both East River (66% approve/29% disapprove) and West River (53%
approve/41% disapprove).

• There is not a significant gender gap to Noem’s job rating. She has a 63% approve/31% disapprove
rating with men, and 61% approve/34% disapprove among women.

• Looking at some other key groups, Noem has a 71% approve/26% disapprove rating with senior

citizens, an 86% approve/9% disapprove rating with conservatives, and a 55% approve/42% disapprove
rating with moderates.

Governor Kristi Noem has a strong approval rating from South Dakota voters. She has excellent numbers with
her Republican base, and does well throughout the state.
