The following outlines the key findings of a study of the 2024 Republican Primary audience in South
Dakota that included 1,017 likely Republican Primary voters. The survey was conducted on January 30th
and January 31st, 2024, using mobile text message responses and landline phone interviews.
The survey is balanced to reflect the true voting populations of South Dakota by age, gender, education
level, race, and DMA. The primary election audience survey has a margin of error of +/- 3.06%.

On an initial test, 38% of likely Republican primary voters indicate they support carbon capture pipelines
in South Dakota, with the strongest support coming from urban and suburban voters.

The economic boost from carbon capture pipelines plays a pivotal role in influencing support, with a
majority (51%) expressing support if the entire state would receive a financial benefit. Notably, this is
strongest among youth voters aged 18-34, with a significant 55% expressing support - suggesting that
economic arguments resonate strongly with this key demographic.

As the data shows, the key to earning the support of the Republican primary electorate is moves to protect
landowners’ rights, with 55% indicating they are more likely to support carbon capture pipelines if the
South Dakota legislature provides for more protections and compensation for these projects. Further,
youth voters indicate the most support, with nearly two-thirds supporting carbon capture pipelines under
these protections.
The sentiment of Republican primary voters in regards to carbon capture pipelines within South Dakota,
38% are in support while 35% are opposed.

Conclusion
Republican primary voters in South Dakota are split on the issue of carbon capture pipelines with Urban
voters being the most opposed.

South Dakota’s Republican primary electorate is initially opposed to carbon capture pipelines, but a
