  Introduction Time

Introduction What did we talk about yesterday? Archetype - repeated pattern 5 min
or concept within literature. Meta-concept - a concept that
explains how we look at something. Mrs. Granberga has been
talking to you in homeroom about brain development and our
lens, and part of looking at things through our lens is by
exploring meta-concepts or explanations for how we look at
things. Meta - self. The hero’s journey. The hero’s journey in
Koala Lou - emphasize courage, a character trait that our unit is
themed on. We are going to be exploring courage today, but in
a slightly different vein - from the side of the creator of the text,
not the text itself.

Agenda Today we are going to be doing an activity called egg scramble,

learning a little bit about the poem’s author.

Remember to take attendance! (before starting class)  3 min

                         Body

Activity Egg Scramble (Tea Party) 15 min

-explain the full instructions before giving them the poem slips
- on each of these slips of paper is a line from a poem. I am
going to hand these out, and will give you one or two. I will
give you time to mill about the classroom, and share your line
with as many classmates as you can. Your goal is to figure out
the meaning and the purpose of the poem, even with it being
out of order and without a title.
- before then, hand out the worksheet. Take a look at it. Leave it
on your desk. As you think you figure out a part of the poem,
write it down on the sheet.
- be sure they know what a gist statement is.
- hand out sheets, then hand slips out one by one. DO NOT
LOOK AT THE SLIP. Once everyone has one you may turn it
over, and begin to try to figure out the meaning of the poem by
reading your line out to others.
Egg scramble.

Activity Class discussion 5 min

-tell me what you have discerned about the speaker?
-anything about the setting?
-what is the problem that this poem is centered around?
Share some of your gist statements.
Display poem on the board and read it out loud.
Did we get it? What do you think the meaning of the poem is
now?

Activity This poem was written by a young boy named Mattie Stepanek. 5 min
He wrote hundreds of poems, and he called them Heartsongs.
We are going to watch a video to learn a little bit about him.
The purpose of this video is to learn more about the context of
the poem. There will be a quiz after this video. Haha
