Concept Notes:
What is a Komedya? Is a colorful theatrical tradition with plots that revolve around social, political
and religious themes between the Christians and the Muslims.
-The Spanish komedya is a religious drama and was the earliest form of theater during the 6 th
century.
-it depicts faith, folk beliefs, and community history.
What are the types of Komedya?
1. Secular Komedya- performed in local fiestas
Ex: Moro- moro
2. Religious Komedya-include the Senakulo, Siete Palabras
What are the characteristics of the different types of Komedya?
1. Komedya – Spanish komedya were the early form of theater that was introduced in the
Philippines by the Spaniards in the late 16 th century. The first comedias are religious dramas
where themes centers on the lives of kings and nobles as well as their battles against the
infidels.
2. Moro-moro – is a type of secular komedya which depicts the battle between the Christians
and the Moors. It is a traditional music play that depicts the battle between the Christians and
the Muslims.
3. Sarswela – is a famous theater form or melodrama which is accompanied with songs and
dances that was introduced in the Philippines by the Spaniards.
What are the types of sarswela?
1. Sandugong Panaginip – composed by Ladislao Bonus, considered as the “Father of Philippine
Opera”
2. Walang Sugat – 1902 is a sarswela play which talks about the Filipino foibles.
3. Paglipas ng Dilim – 1920 is a sarswela play that attacks social evils, like usury.
4. Dalagang Bukid – is a play that tells an entertaining love story.

Concept Notes:
Who are the early Philippine Theatrical Musician?
1. Ladislao Bonus (1854-1908) He is considered as the “Father of the Filipino Opera”, a native
from Pandacan who organized the first Filipino Opera in 1886-1887 as a director and
conductor.
Musical pieces: Sandugong Panaginip, Unang Pag ibig, Ang Buhay and also conducted Arevalo
band.
2. Florencio Lerma (1861-1897) he directed orchestra that provided the music in local theater.
He worked with several troupes engaged in performing zarswela touring the Philippines. He
was executed with ten others collectively known as the Bicol martyrs.
3. Bonifacio Abdon (1876-1944) he is a violinist and conductors, worked with the dramatist
Patricio Mariano in writing the music for the sarswela.
His musical pieces: Ang Samapaguita, Deni, Ang Tulisan, Lahat Dugo, Declaracion de Amor,
Carnaval No. 1, Huwag Lang Lugi sa Puhunan.
4. Alejo Carluen (1872-1941) He composed music for some thirty-one sarswela, including six
librettos by Felipe Paguia, six by B. Buenaventura, and two by Severino Reyes.
His musical pieces: Ang Mga Pusong Dakila, Mga Pinagpala, Magdapio and Gayuma.
Who are some of the Prominent Filipino composers that contributed in the Musical
Arena?
5. Nicanor Abelardo: is a Filipino composer who composed over a hundred kundiman songs
especially before and during the World War 11. Born in San Miguel de Mayuno, Bulacan in
February 7, 1893. He was five years old when it was introduced about music. At the age of 8
he was able to composed a song entitled “Ang Unang Buko” which was dedicated to his
grandmother.
6. Levi Celerio is a Filipino composer and lyricist, born on April 30, 1910 in Tondo, Manila,
Philippines. He received free education to the Academy of Music in Manila and became the
youngest affiliate of the Manila Symphony Orchestra. He composed 4000 songs to his acclaim
including Filipino folk, Christmas and love songs. He was awarded as a national artist of the
Philippines for Music in 1997.
7. Ryan Cayabyab- was born Raymundo Cipriano Pujante Caybyab on May 4, 1954 in
Manila,Philippines. Ryan’s mother was a singer who died when he was 6. Nothing his
incomparable ability on the piano. He graduated from UP College of Music earning a Bachelor
of Music, Major in Composition degree. A professor in UP Diliman for about two decades.
8. Catalina “Katy” Mangahas was born on February 13, 1907. Her path to stardom as a Bodabil
queen started when she was only 7 years old.
