Animal Farm

Chapter 1
-Mr Jones ( Nicholas II ) a farmer ( Manor Farm ): drunk.

-Old Major ( Marx/Lenin ): respected by all animals, has a dream to


communicate.

-Pigs, Dogs, Boxer ( horse ), Clover and Mollie ( mares ), Muriel


( goat ), Benjamin ( donkey ), except Moses ( raven )
-Animals are now ready to hear Old Major.
-The lives of his fellow animals are “miserable, laborious, and
short.” 
-Animals are born into the world as slaves.
-A world in which animals live without the tyranny of men: they are
free, happy and treated with dignity.
-Rebellion!
-All men are enemies. All animals are comrades.
-Rats and rabbits: comrades? ( opposition to the Bolsheviks /
beggars, thieves, foreigners, lower class people )
-He reminds them the ways of man are completely corrupt: once
the humans have been defeated, the animals must never adopt any
of their habits ( alcohol, money, clothes, smoking, etc.)
-All animals are equal.
-Old Major´s dream: earth without Man.
-Beasts of England ( famous socialist anthem: The Internationale ).
Chapter 2
-Old Major died before the actual rebellion ( unlike Lenin, who died
after the rebellion in 1924 )

-Pigs ( The Bolshevik Party )took control. They are recognised as the
most intelligent animals.
-Napoleon ( Stalin ) and Snowball ( Trotski ) were the leaders.
-Squealer ( Molotov: head of Communist propaganda )
-Animalism ( Communism )
-The rest of the animals were stupid. Mollie: sugar, ribbons ( upper
class, aristocracy against change )
-Moses ( Russian Orthodox church ): Sugar Candy Mountain.
Heaven for animals. Pigs against it.

-Boxer and Clover ( working class ) faithful.


-Mr Jones: drunk, not feeding the animals.
-Rebellion! Jones was expelled.
-Animals destroyed everything that reminded them of Jones.
-Pigs learned how to read and write.
-Manor Farm to Animal Farm ( Russia to The Russian Soviet
Republic )
-The Seven Commandments.
-The cows were milked. Lots of it.

-Napoleon: Never mind. The harvest is more important.


Chapter 3 Part 1
-Pigs didn´t work; they supervised.
-Harvest was a success.
-Boxer and Clover worked very hard.

Chapter 3 Part 2
-Boxer wakes up 30 minutes before any other animal. “I will work
harder” his motto.
Chapter 3 Part 3
-Mollie ( mare ) did not like to work.

-Cat ( the educated in Russia who did not work with their hands )
-Benjamin ( donkey ): all intellectuals who choose to ignore politics.
Chapter 3 Part 4
-No work on Sundays.
-New flag.

-The Meeting.
-Napoleon and Snowball: the most active in the debates, but never
in agreement.
-Beasts of England.
Chapter 3 Part 5
-Snowball and his committees. A failure except the reading and
writing classes.

-Muriel ( minority of educated working class ) and Benjamin read


very well.
-Boxer: A, B, C, D.
-Mollie: just the letters of her name.
Chapter 3 Part 6
-Seven Commandments: Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad ( sheep
loved it )

-Birds?
Chapter 3 Part 7
-Napoleon: Education of the young is more important than
educating everybody. Took 9 puppies and educated them himself.

-Milk and apples reserved for the pigs…Jones!
