INTRODUCTION

There are several rules for using informed speech in English. The reported speech is also called
indirect style. And so is the opposite of direct style, which uses quotes. In general, the indirect
style uses a "step back" in time. In other words, we change the verb tense to the past.
1. ACTIVITY 7 - REPORTED SPEECH

"The main tournament is played in a month"


She said the tournament is played in a month.

"The soccer tournament is held once every 4 years"


She said that the tournament is held every four years

"Sometimes the games are not clean."


She said the matches sometimes weren't clean

"As the tournament progresses, fewer teams remain"


She said that there were more of my teams as the games progressed

"The final match determines the champion"


She said that the last game defines the champion

"Of the initial 32 teams, only 16 advance to the next phase"


The presenter said that of the 32 initial teams only 16 qualify for the next phase

"There are penalty cards of two different colors to punish the players"
She said there are two-color cards to penalize players.

"I have been to several World Cups."


She said she had been to several World Cups.

"I know what to do to understand the phases of the World Cup."


He said he knew what to do to understand the phases of the World Cup.

He said: "I was preparing to watch the World Cup."


He said he had prepared to watch the World Cup when I called.
"I will go tomorrow to see my favorite team play in the World Cup"
He said he would go tomorrow to see his favorite team.

Are we going to the stadium today? Dad asked.


Dad asked if we should go to the stadium that day.

2. CONCLUSION

The reported speech is used to paraphrase ideas expressed by another person in order to narrate in our
own words what someone has said. When repeating these words, the verb tenses undergo a series of
modifications. The reported speech involves answering the question”
