Accident Rates at Intersections, Ai

Nx 1 ,000 , 000
A i=
Tx 365 xAADT

Where:
N = number of accident occurences
T = time frame of analysis in years
AADT = annual average daily traffic
Example Problem:

An intersection has a record of following number of accidents for 5 years:

Fatal = 8
Injury = 63
Property Damage = 136

If the AADT for this particular intersection is 3,010, determine the accident rate per million entering
vehicles.

Accident Rate at Highway Section, As:

Nx 100 ,000 , 000

As=
Tx 365 xAADTxL

Where:
N = number of accident occurences
T = time frame of analysis in years
AADT = annual average daily traffic
L = length of highway section in km
Example Problem:

A 5-km highway section has a recorded number of accidents of 550 in 5 years. If the average daily traffic
of this highway section is 12,480, determine the accident rate per 100 million vehicle-kilometer.
