Self directed learning in various

context
 Students need various skills and attitudes towards learning for
successful independent study.

 This involves students conducting a self-evaluation of their current

situation, study habits, family situation, and support network both at
school and at home and also involves evaluating past experiences
with independent learning

 SDL learning contexts are many such as personal, professional,

organizational, educational, and online environment
Cont..
 SDL is also becoming a prominent feature of continuing
professional education in many fields including physical
therapy, dental education and medical education

 These profession recognize the need for continuous lifelong

learning and attempting to build it in the curriculum

 SDL is also use in business and organizational selecting

strategy for competing in a globalizing changing environment
Cont..

 Higher education is yet another site where SDL has taken

hold most common in adult education programs

 It is now used in service learning project and problem

based education especially in medical education

 SDL in online contexts in a growing phenomenon with

implications for both the learning process and learner
attributes
Assessing Self Directed Learning
 Self-directed learners exhibit many common and measurable
characteristics.

 Intrinsic motivation, the ability to select personal goals, self-

discipline, the ability to self-assess.

 Self-directed learners are engaged emotionally in the learning

process, maintain high levels of self-generated motivation to pursue
their self-determined goals and objectives.
COSTA AND KALLICKS CRITERIA FOR
SELF DIRECTED LEARNING

 According to Costa and Kallick a self-directed person "can be

described as being self-managing, self-monitoring, and self
modifying. Other terms defined similarly are self-determination,
self-regulation, and independent learning.

for both the learning process and learner attributes.
Self managing:

 Draw from prior knowledge sensory data and intuition to guide

hone and refine action

 Mange time effectively

 Produce new knowledge through own research

 Use clear language

 Display a sense of humor

Self-monitoring

 Seeks perspectives beyond self and others to develop thoughtful responses

 Generate new and innovative ideas

 Generate problem solving strategies

 Manages self in relation to group

 Is aware of what is known and not known and develop strategies to fill in the
gaps

 Evaluates, corrects and adjust to work to improve its quality

Self-modifying

 Explores choice point between self assertion and self integration

with others

 Seek feedback from appropriate recourses for improved

performance

 Reflects on and learns from experience

 Continue to learn new skills and strategies

 Thoughtfully receive feedback and act on it

Highlights of costa and kellick's
assessment strategies includes:
 Holding conferences with peers or the instructor to reflect on
learning goals
 Monitor progressed and adjusts needed
 May create a set of reflective questions such as
 What is working well with your project
 What is not going well
 What adjustment do you nee to made
 Costa and kellick identify factor that diminish SDL such as there
being too much dependency on the instructor
 When learner has the un clear vision about their projects it can also
be difficult to focus and sustain them
 SDL project will also suffer from instructor who try to over control and
micromanage the process
Critiques of SDL

 Although SDL has been embraced by many, it is not without its

problems.

 First, the assumption that all adults desire self-direction in their

learning is problematic on developmental, technical, economic,
and cultural levels.

 Self directed learning is very "western" in nature and is not accepted

as a typical style of learning in many Asian communities.

 Self directed learning also lacks facilitated goal setting

Cont.…

 there is no evaluation as compared to other results. Also, not all

adults have the means to engage in SDL pursuits.

 Brookfield 1984 suggest that SDL describe how the dominant

majority learners and ignore important aspects of culture and
context

 It tend to be a western teaching method that ,may b culturally at

odds with some learners
