Who are you? What makes you? These reflect to the question on the existence of one’s self.

Self
is like a sea, boundless and immeasurable. It governs everything that is about us, our identity,
personalities, behaviors, principles and other more. It is a collective succession of our experiences,
impressions and thoughts which are mainly divided on different perspectives namely, philosophical,
physiological, social, sexual, material, spiritual, political and digital self that makes us distinct among
others.

Philosophically speaking, I view myself as a nonphysical god-created consciousness. Like how

replicas are produce in the industry, God created us according to His image. The value of myself is
connected to the Lord. If God is of great and inestimable value, then I made in His image must be of
great value too. Through the nonphysical substance- the soul, this provide essence to my whole being.
This serves as the inheritance of the characteristics of the Lord, but like the replicas, myself as a person
can never be equal to our Creator. We are only copied and made for a purpose. In the end, everything
comes back to the Lord.

In the contrary, the self emerges as a cognitive construct. This involves activity on the brain
through logical reasoning and intellectual processes in the presence of our self-identity and self-concept.
I find myself as a puzzle over multiple needs and desire. Like a Rubik’s cube, it comprises a series of
progressive and interdependent steps where one must complete the first layer first before continuing to
the higher layers until everything is perfectly matched. Relating to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, one
must satisfy the first level of need before attending to the higher ones until you

achieved the highest level which is self-actualization.

As for social self, our identity is mainly influenced by the views of the society. How we act and
how we form ourselves are affected by the standards of the society. I see myself as a mirror where
multiple image of me is reflected depending to what is fitting to the situations. On the family, the self
reflects the role of a son while on the classroom, the self reflects the role of a student on me. I can be
different on those areas, specially my personality and behavior, but both is still part of my true self. The
changes on personalities and behavior belongs to only one original self.

Part of ourselves which we should understand the most is our sexuality. Sexuality is an integral
part of being a person of who you want to be. It is our freedom to choose what role in the society we
would like to part with, but as an individual, I describe myself as an equilateral triangle where all sides
are equal. Like an equilateral triangle, I believe that everyone must have equal rights and opportunities
in life. I’m against superiority and discrimination against other sex and I treat their roles as equally
important for a stable society.

Other than attachments into the opposite sex, we also have attachments into physical materials.
These are the possession produced by our wants and needs which became an extended part of
ourselves. The object that represent my material self is smartphone. The smartphone is one of my
closest friend. Whenever I get boring and there isn’t someone to talk to, I used my phone to relieve
myself. My smartphone contains all the necessary information about which I hold the most. Whenever I
lost it, I always felt uneasy and every time I sleep, I always put it besides me.
Through the presence of social media platforms found on our phones or any social devices, this
gave birth to the creation of digital identity. Here, we can be anyone that we want, it is the most flexible
part of ourselves. My identity in the social media is like a mask, I used it to cover or protect my true self
from insult or danger. By wearing that mask, I felt more empowered to open up myself and converse
with other people. What I can’t say in personal, I can easily express in the social media.

In the modern society, social media has become a great influence in politics. It became a
channel of circulating news, political campaign and activities and has the power to change not just the
message but also the dynamics of their meanings. My political self is like a magnifying glass; I seek to
search for the truth. I try to maximize the details and fact check if it is either true or not. By fact
checking, I can classify the information as fake news and inform others about it. Also by maximizing into
the details, I can tell if the senate or any speaker are telling facts or just made up fallacies.
