Leakage under the foundation gives a pressure distribution under the dam as indicated. The dam width is {= 24 m. The specific weight of the concrete is 24 KN/m3. Will the dam topple over about point A if the water height, , is maximum? (12 marks) Explain the three conditions of stability of a floating body in equilibrium. State the criteria in relation to metacentre for each con: (5 marks) A wooden cylinder has the dimension: diameter, d = 12 cm and length, L = 42 em. The relative density is 0.5. A metal disc with dimension: diameter of 12 cm and 1.5 com thick is rigidly attached to the bottom end of the wooden eylinder. Relative density of the metal is 5.0. The combined cylinder is placed in the water and its axis is assumed in vertical position. (Draw the diagram to indicate all forces acting on the combined cylinder as a floating body Gi) Calculate the height of submerged, h ii) Determine the position of centre of buoyancy, B (iv) Estimate the position of centre of gravity of the combined cylinder, G (¥) Determine the condition of stability of the combined cylinder. Assume that the effects of viscous are neglected, Determine i) the flow rate, Q, and (ii) the manometer reading, h. (10 marks) Describe body forces and surface forces by giving examples. Explain how the net force acting on control volume is determined. (5 marks) Water flowing steadily at a rate of 0.16 m°/s is deflected downward by an angled elbow as shown in Figure Q4 (b). The diameters at inlet an outlet are 0.3 m and 0.1 m, respectively. The total mass of the elbow and its component is 15 kg and its internal volume is 0.03 m®. Determine the force acting on the flanges of the elbow and its line of action makes withe the horizontal. Assume / is $0 cm, (15 marks) CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL BDA20603 PART B: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS Qs 6 (@) (b) (a) (b) Define the Reynolds number and give the value of Reynolds number for laminar, ional and turbulent flows in a pipe under most practical conditions. (5 marks) ‘Two water reservoirs A and B as shown in Figure QS (b) are connected to each other through a 40 m long, 2 cm diameter cast iron pipe with a sharp-edged entrance. The pipe also involves a swing check valve and a fully open gate valve. The water level in both reservoirs is the same, but reservoir A is pressurized by compressed air while reservoir B is open to the atmosphere at 88 kPa. If the initial flow rate through the pipe is 1.2 Lis, determine the absolute air pressure on top of reservoir A. Take the water temperature to be 10°C. Use Moody Chart for friction factor and the roughness of cast iron pipe is ¢= 0.26 mm. (15 marks) ‘The flow rate Q through an orifice plate is a function of pipe diameter D, pressure drop Ap across the orifice, fluid density p and viscosity 4, and orifice dimeter d. Using D, p and Ap as repeating variables, express this relationship in dimensionless form, (15 marks) ‘The aerodynamic drag of a new sports car is to be predicted at a speed of 80 km/hr at an air temperature of 25°C. Automotive engineers build a one fifth scale model of the car to test in a wind tunnel. It is winter and the wind tunnel is located in an unheated building; the temperature of the wind tunnel air is only about 5°C. Determine how fast the engineers should run the wind tunnel in order to achieve similarity between the model and the prototype. The density of air at 5° and 25° are 1.269 kg/m? and 1.184 kg/m?, respectively. The viscosity of air at 5° and 25° are 1.754 x 10%kg/ms and 1.849 x 10° kg/m, respectively, (5 marks) - END OF QUESTIONS ~ CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL BDA20603 FINAL EXAMINATION SEMESTER / SESSION: SEM II /2017/2018 PROGRAMME: BDD COURSE FLUID MECHANICS 1 COURSE CODE; BDA20603.
