Multiple Regression

An individual's income affects their lifestyle and standard of living. However, there are

questions on whether the level of education reached and the number of hours worked per week is

significant in determining its value. Therefore, this paper tries to answer the research question;

does the number of working hours per week and the academic level affect the individual’s

income? The null hypothesis for this research states that the individual’s income has no

association with the number of hours worked in a week, and the highest academic level acquired.

Multiple logistic regression design is the best statistical tool that can adequately analyze the data

for this research. The reason for this choice is that the study wants to determine how the value of

an individual’s income is affected using two factors. In this case, the dependent variable is the

individual’s income. This variable has a continuous measurement of scale hence fulfilling the

assumption of multiple regression methods (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2017). The

independent variable is the number of working hours in a week, which has a continuous level of

measurement. The factor “highest year of education” acted as a control variable in the study.

This variable also acts as an independent variable because it assists in determining the income of

a person. The academic level of an individual affects the income simultaneously as the working

hours per week. Therefore, the highest education level could have led to a confounding situation

in the study; hence, it had to act as a control variable.

The SPSS software gave the following output:

This table gives Pearson’s correlation R= .740, which indicates a positive association. R2 and

adjusted R2 are different because of two independent variables (Laureate, 2016). Adjusted R2= .

517 indicating that the model explains about 51.7% of the variability. This statistic gives the

effect size, which is moderate.

This table gives p-value=.000, which is less than .05. This output indicates that the model

used has statistical significance; hence, it can play a role in decision making.

a. Dependent Variable: RESPONDENT INCOME IN CONSTANT DOLLARS
This table indicates that the slope of the regression line will cut the y-axis at -5799.371. This

output shows that the highest year of school completed has a p-value of .154, which is higher

than .05. This result depicts that education has no relationship with income when the number of

working hours per week is constant. The number of hours worked, on the other hand, gives a p-

value = .000, which less than .05 indicating that it has a relationship with an individual's income

when the education level is constant (Wagner, 2019). This significance depicts that for every unit

increase in the number of working hours, it leads to the rise in an individual's income by

1633.262 when the education level is constant.
