v READING AND WRITING TESTS: The tests are written in-class during lecture times, as indicated
on the course schedule. The tests are cumulative and include all content studied and covered
up to that point in lectures and tutorial although they will focus mostly on the material covered
recently. All three term test will have the same format and will include questions that will cover
grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, written expression, and cultural knowledge.
Each test will count 10%
v VIDEOS: Students will be required to submit two videos during the entire academic year. The
purpose of both videos is to assess a student’s ability to communicate in Spanish. Videos should
be between 3-5 minutes and must be completed in groups of 5-7 people. Students are urged to
be as creative as possible when working on this assignment. Videos must be uploaded on to
MyMedia at https://mymedia.library.utoronto.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyMedia.woa In
order to access this website, one of the team members must enter his or her UTORid. The first
video (due on Nov. 10) will need to be e-mailed to your course instructor by 5pm. Additionally,
e-mail your second video (due on Mar. 27) to your tutorial instructor by 5pm with a copy to the
course coordinator: juancarlos.rochaosornio@utoronto.ca Note: your second video will be
shown during tutorial times and all members of the team must be present in order to receive
credit. All videos will be evaluated according to creativity, organization, clarity, grammar and
vocabulary. Specific details on how to successfully complete this project will be provided by
your instructor and/or information will be uploaded on to blackboard. Each video will count 6%
v ONLINE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: All homework assignments will be done on Connect, the
online platform for your textbook, Puntos de partida. Students receive points for completing the
assignments by the due date. No points are deducted for errors; students only lose points for
not completing the assignments on time. PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS FOR
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS.
v SHORT VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR QUIZZES: There will be a vocabulary and grammar quiz
following the end of each textbook chapter with the exception of chapters 4, 7 and 11. Students
will have 10 minutes to complete the quiz at the end of class and only 6 out of 8 quizzes will
count in order to allow students to drop/miss two quizzes.
v PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE: Participation will be evaluated based on the level of
preparedness, use of target language, and active contribution to all class activities. Students are
advised to keep up with the work day by day in order to make progress.
v FINAL EXAM: The final exam is cumulative, and includes materials covered in lectures and
tutorials. In order to pass the course, students must pass with a minimum grade of 50%,
irrespective of the accumulated grade before the final. This requirement applies to all students,
including those who choose the Credit/NonCredit option. The final exam date will be assigned
by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The final exam will be restricted and the format will be
similar to that of term tests.
v CULTURAL EVENTS: Throughout the academic year, there will be opportunities to claim up to
5% of extra credit for participating in cultural events organized by the Department of Spanish
and Portuguese. Details on how to become involved will be provided by your course instructor,
tutorial instructor, and/or language coordinator.

DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES
TESTS AND EXAMS
Tests and exams must be written on their scheduled dates. Students are advised to not make holiday or
other travel/employment plans until the Faculty-wide examination timetables are posted.
Please note that the weighting of tests, exams, and class assignments cannot be modified or changed. It
is your responsibility to contact your course instructor and T.A. within five business days if you miss any
test or exam. No make-ups will be allowed without the presentation of the appropriate documentation,
available at http://illnessverification.utoronto.ca/. The original medical certificate (or other relevant
documentation) is to be handed in to your instructor as soon as possible. There are no make-ups for
tests or online assignments. Extra work cannot be substituted for missed test, exams, or assignments.
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION
You are expected to attend all class meetings you are registered for (both lectures and tutorials) and to
participate actively. Your ability to speak, write and understand Spanish can be only developed and
improved through daily individual work, and intensive in-class practice. As an active participant, you will
also contribute to your classmates’ learning through pair and small-group work as well as peer review
activities. Inconsistent attendance (including frequent absences and late arrivals) will negatively impact
your level of participation and will significantly affect your final Participation grade. Should you miss any
lecture or tutorial, it is your responsibility to find out what was done in class, what handouts were given,
what the next homework assignment is, etc.
CLASS PREPARATION
You are expected to complete all assigned homework prior to coming to class so that you can participate
actively in all course activities, group work, etc. Coming to class fully prepared will help you have a
rewarding and productive experience. For every textbook chapter, your required homework includes:
• Studying the weekly vocabulary and grammatical structures to be covered for the chapter
• Completing the reading passages to be covered for the chapter
• Completing any assigned exercises and practice activities for the chapter
