MEMORANDUM

DATE: October 10th, 2022

TO: Dr. Pier LeCompte, Professor
FROM: Isabelle González, Student
SUBJECT: Report on workshop on How to Deliver an Effective Presentation

I attended a workshop offered by Dr. Lourdes Ortiz from the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce English
Department on August 30th, 2022. The workshop was an online conference which purpose was to guide the
appropriate process on delivering an effective presentation. During the workshop, Dr. Ortiz taught the
audience to identify common errors in presentations and provided tips that will make the preparing and
execution processes for presentations, easier and error free. This report will stand out the six tips for
preparing a presentation.
TIPS ON HOW TO DELIVER AN EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION
1. Plan ahead of time: Timetables are recommended to help structure and keep track of the tasks that
must be done and the time they may take to carry through.

2. Know your audience and define the purpose: Every presenter must know what audience they are
addressing and why. Information like age and academic level along with venue or conference type
are important to know in order to create an appropriate presentation for a particular occasion.

3. Create an easy to follow structure: Following an ABC format, the presentation must include an
introduction, body and conclusion. Quotes as introductions, emphasizing relevant or important
information and concluding with a summary or recommendation are allowed depending on the
needs of each presentation.

4. Follow presentation guidelines: A six by six (6X6) rule is recommended to facilitate comprehension
and avoid crowded slides. The rule implies six words per line and six lines per slide. In addition,
few fonts, white spaces, graphs, and tables are also encouraged.

5. Practice your presentation: Presenters must practice to achieve a good execution of their
presentation. Rehearsing elocution (pronunciation, grammar, tone, and speech rate) and projection
(eye contact, gestures posture, attire, and confidence) are most important.

6. Do your presentation: When it is time to present, the presenter must be focused, and it is advised
that engagement with the audience occurs to maintain their interest and attention.

CLOSING

The information provided during the workshop is an asset when it comes to preparing presentations. The
six tips on how to deliver an effective presentation will most likely be used by the participants of the
workshop when necessary. My recommendation would be to offer more workshops about the same and
similar topics for student enrichment.
