LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS LECTURE:
➢Design structural member subjected to combined
bending and compression.
COMBINED BENDING AND TENSION
When bending moment occurs simultaneously with
an axial tension force

➢The effects of these combined stresses must be

taken into account

SAMPLE PROBLEM:
BENDING AND TENSION
Analyze the adequacy of the 2”x8” (nominal
section) lower chord of a truss with an expected
loading of 2 kN/m and a tensile force equal to 50
kN. Connections are assumed to be pinned. The
total span is 4.0m. Assume that the lateral buckling
is prevented by the ceiling. Properties of Agoho: Fb
= Ft = 26.3 MPa, E = 8.22 GPa. Assume normal
duration and dry service condition.
