Aim

This experiment is interested in determining viscosity of drilling fluids.

Theory

Viscosity is the measure of a substance's resistance to motion under an applied force. There are 2
types of viscosity which are Funnel Viscosity and Plastic Viscosity. The Marsh Funnel was
invented by Hallan N. Marsh in 1931.It is used to measure the time in seconds required to fill a
set volume of fluid. (In the United States the volume is one quart.) The flow through the small tip
at the end of the funnel is related to the rheological properties of the fluid being measured. The
Marsh Funnel “viscosity” is reported as seconds and used as an indicator of the relative
consistency of fluids. The more viscous the fluid the longer the time to fill one quart. High-
viscosity drilling mud is typically described as “thick,” while low-viscosity mud is characterized
as “thin”. The Marsh Funnel provides a simple and effective tool to determine the relative
viscosity of drilling mud.

Calibration

Fill the funnel to the bottom of the screen (1500 ml) with water at 70 oF (plus or minus 5 oF)
time of outflow of the quart (946 ml) should be 26 seconds plus or minus 0.5 second.

Procedure

(1) With the funnel in an upright position, cover the orifice with a finger and pour the freshly
collected mud sample through the screen into a clean, dry funnel until the fluid level
reaches the bottom of the screen (1500 ml).

(2) Immediately remove the finger from the outlet and measure the time required for the mud
to fill the receiving vessel to the 1-quart (946 ml) level.

(3) Report the result to the nearest second as Marsh Funnel Viscosity at the temperature of the
measurement in degrees Fahrenheit or Centigrade.

Result and discussion

Parameter Time(s)
Water 26.5
Table 1 parameter of water

Parameter Time(s) Density with mud balance Effective viscosity (cp)

mud 36.45 8.65 11.88968

Table 2 parameters of mud

As it is shown in the table in the experiment when using marsh funnel for water the time that was
recorded was more than that was needed which was (25.5s), so this step was done again this time
is more accurate than the previous one and the time which was recorded was (26.5s).the time was

2
recorded again but this was for the mud and it was (36.45 s), then the mud density was measured
by mud balance and it was (8.65ppg) and the recorded time and density was used to find
viscosity of mud which is (11.99868 cp).

Conclusion

To sum up in the experiment at the first mud was made and mud balance was used to find
density then marsh funnel was used and time was recorded these are done to find the viscosity of
the mud.
