THEORY:
Many machine components or instruments are subjected to forces from the support.
For example while moving in a vehicle; the ground undulation will cause vibration which will be
transmitted to the passenger. Such a system can be modelled by a spring-mass-damper system
as shown in figure-1(a).
Figure 1
Let y(t) denote the displacement of the base and x(t) the displacement of the mass from its
static equilibrium position at time t. Then the net elongation of the spring is x− y and the
relative velocity between the two ends of the damper is ẋ− ẏ.
Here the support motion is considered in the form of y (t)=Ysint, which is transmitted to mass
m, by spring(stifness k) and damper (Damping coefficient c). let x be the vibration of the mass
about its equilibrium position.
From the free-body diagram shown in Figure-1(b), we obtain the equation of motion:
m ẍ + c ( ẋ− ẏ ) +k ( x− y ) =0

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP:
The setup diagram is as shown in figure 2. The base plate gets excited due to the
rotation of the cams. The two cams are in phase with each other. The sprung mass is supported
by the four springs.
The accelerometer is mounted on the sprung mass. The vibration data detected by the
accelerometer is sent to the FFT analyser. These signals can be analyzed using the RT-Pro
Photon software.
