COMMUNITY PROFILE

It was on February
18, 2020 when the
3% student nurses (BSN
4-1) had their first
day of exposure in
the community of
Purok 3 in Barangay
Alulod, Indang. At
that time, they were
able to conduct an
initial assessment of
the community as
97% well as interviews
with the locals, and
finished gathering
the data within that
week. Based on the
data gathered, there
were total of 34 families and 146 total number of population living in the community. The gathered
data were represented by graphs.

It was shown in the graph that Purok 3 contains the 3% of the total population of Barangay
Alulod in Indang.

The graph shows the percentage of the population based on their sex corresponding to their
age. It is identified that the higher percentage (19%) in female population falls under the age of 21 to
25 years old while in male population mostly are aged 6 to 10 years old with a percentage of 12.

In 2010, the median age of the country’s population was 23.4 years, which means that half
of the household population was younger than 23.4 years. This is higher than the median age of 21.3
years recorded in 2000. The country’s median age for males in 2010 was 22.9 years, while that for
females, 23.9 years. Of the 92.1 million household population in the Philippines, 50.4 percent were
males and 49.6 percent were female. This resulted is a sex ratio of 102 males per 100 females (PSA).

The graph shows the percentage of the population in terms of their civil status which was
categorized into four: married, single, cohabitating/live in and widow/widower. It was shown that
mostly of the population were already married (58%). According to the PSA, the total number of
marriages recorded in 2018 was 449,169. On the other hand, 26% of the population were still single,
15% were under cohabitating/live in category and there was 1% whose widow or a widower.

As it was defined by the PSA 2020, single is a person who has never been married. Married
are couple living together as husband and wife, legally or consensually. Widowed is a person whose
bond of matrimony has been dissolved by death of his/her spouse. Cohabitation is an arrangement
where two or more people are not married but live together (Wikipedia).

The collected kinds of ethnic groups of the population were Bisaya, Tagalog, Waray,
Bicolano, and Kapampangan which was shown in the graph. Most of the locals living in the
community have the ethnic background of Bisaya (58%). According to World Atlas, Bisaya is the 4 th
largest ethnic group in the Philippines gathering 7.6% of the population. Some locals of Purok 3 were
Tagalog (28%) which ranked second in the graph. It is said that Tagalog is the largest population in
the Philippines that has 28.1% in total. There were also 10% of Waray and few of them were
Bicolano (1%) and Kapampangan (1%).

There were two categories of religion within the community: the Mormons and Catholic. The
graph clearly shows that almost of the population in Purok 3 were Catholic with a percentage of
97.38. Philippines is one of known country that is dominated by the Roman Catholic religion. It is
stated by CIA WORLD FACTBOOK that 80.6% are Roman Catholics in the country. The remaining 6.2%
of the population of Purok 3 were Mormons (Mormons are a religious group that embrace concepts
of Christianity as well as revelations made by their founder, Joseph Smith – History.com Editors,
2018).

 Education
The graph presents the population’s level of education which was divided into three
categories: graduate, undergraduate and currently enrolled. It can be seen that Highschool graduate
got the highest percentage (21.37%) among other level. In undergraduate category, there were
14.50% whose undergraduate of Elementary followed by Highschool undergraduate with 12.21%
and 5% of the population were College undergraduate. There were also students in the community
whose currently enrolled in Nursery with a highest peak (30.50%), Elementary students (20.61%),
Highschool students (13.70%) and 0.76% whose currently enrolled in College.

According to WENR (World Education News and Reviews) 2018, the net enrollment rate in
Kindergarten jumped from 55% (2010) to 74.6 percent in 2015. Elementary school completion rates
climbed from low of under 70% in year 2005 to more than 83% in 2015. The gross tertiary enrolment
rate increased from 27.5 percent in 2005 to 35.7 percent in 2014. Filipino experts have noted that
the number of graduates from higher education programs has recently “exceeded expectations”.

The graph shows that mostly of the family in the community were nuclear types with highest
percentage (79.41%) among other type of family. The 17.64% falls under extended type of family
and there were 2.94% with a blended family.

Nuclear family is also known as the conjugal family or family of procreation. It is comprised
of married partners and their offspring. Extended family is the most common type of family in the
world. It includes at least three generations: grandparents, married offspring, and grandchildren.
Blended family is formed when divorced or widowed parents who have children marry. (Lumen

The frequency distribution about the decision making within the family based on the data
shows that 64.70% of the household were patriarchal. Patriarchal means in which men hold primary
power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control
of property. Some households were matriarchal with 29.41%. In contrast with patriarchal,
matriarchal system is which females are the head of the family. There were also 5.88% answered
that it is a joint decision making in which the mother and father are making the decision.

 Decision Making regarding to Health


The graph shows that 67.64% of the families in Purok 3, mothers were mostly the ones who
decides in terms of health. 14.70% came from the fathers and 17.64% of the decision making about
health matters came from both mother and father.

It was recognized that women are the ‘chief medical officers’ in their homes. They were
responsible for most health decisions in the home (Graff, 2017). According to the U.S. Department of
Labor, women make 80 percent of health care decisions in the United States.

 Type of Occupation
The chart implies that 31.91% of the population were currently unemployed. 29.78% of the
people who were employed in Purok 3 have the type of job which is blue collar. A blue collar worker
is a working class person who performs manual labour. Blue collar work may involve skilled or
unskilled labour. It often involves something being physically built or maintained. 1.06% of the
occupation is white collar. The white collar worker typically performs work in an office environment
and may involve sitting at a computer or desk.

 Everyday Expenses
The average everyday expenses of the family in Purok 3 are below 500 pesos gathering
79.41%. On the other hand, 20.58% of the families got expenses for everyday of more than 500
pesos up to 1000 pesos. In 2018, Filipino families earned ₱313,000, on average. In comparison, their
expenditure for the same year was ₱239,000 (663 pesos per day), on average (PSA, 2018).

 Adequacy to meet Basic Needs


The graph shows that almost all of the families living in Purok 3 answered yes, meaning, they
were able to meet basic needs for the family such as food, clothing and shelter. There were few who
claimed that they have difficulties in providing either food or clothing or shelter.

Last April 10, The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) released estimates of poverty
incidence in the first semester of 2018, stating that the proportion of Filipinos in poverty is reduced
to 21% from 27.6% three years ago. On the other hand, those coming from families with income less
than what is required to meet basic food needs were estimated at 8.5% in the first semester of 2018.
