CODE OF CONDUCT FOR
RESPONSIBLE FISHING
What is this code?
It consists of a collection of principles,
objectives and elements for action, it
took more than two years to develop.
Representatives of FAO members,
intergovernmental organizations, the
fishing industry and non-governmental
organizations worked long and hard to
reach agreement on the Code.
Therefore, it is the result of an effort by
many different groups committed to
fishing and aquaculture. In this regard,
the Code represents a global consensus
or agreement on a wide range of
fisheries and aquaculture issues.

Objectives
The real objective of the Code of
Conduct is to help countries and groups
of countries to develop and improve
their fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
However, in the official document of
the Code of Conduct for Responsible
Fisheries drafted in Rome, it refers to its
objectives in Article 2, which are:
a) Establish principles, in
accordance with the relevant
international law norms, so that
fishing and fishing-related
activities are carried out
responsibly, taking into account
relevant biological,
technological, economic, social,
environmental and commercial
aspects ;
b) Establish principles and criteria
for developing and
implementing national policies
aimed at conserving fishery
resources and managing and
developing fisheries responsibly;
c) Serve as a reference instrument
to help States establish or
improve the legal and
institutional framework
necessary for the exercise of
responsible fishing and to
formulate and apply appropriate
measures;
d) Provide guidance that may be
used, when appropriate, in the
formulation and application of
international agreements and
other legal instruments, both
mandatory and voluntary;
e) Facilitate and promote technical
and financial cooperation, as
well as other types of
cooperation, in the conservation
of fishery resources and fisheries
management and development;
f) Promote the contribution of
fisheries to food security and
food quality, giving priority to
the nutritional needs of local
communities;
g) Promote the protection of living
aquatic resources and their
aquatic environments as well as
coastal areas;
h) Promote the trade of fish and
fishery products;
i) Promote fisheries research, as
well as associated ecosystems
and relevant environmental

j) Offer rules of conduct for all
persons involved in the fishing

The Code of Conduct for Responsible
Fisheries insists that countries and all
those who benefit from fishing or
aquaculture, must guarantee future
generations the best possible supplies of
fish, and this is achieved by working
together in order to conserve an orderly
structure of fishery resources and their
habitat. All persons involved in fishing
activities should try to maintain or
restore fish stocks at levels capable of
producing reasonable quantities of
catches both now and in the future.

CONCLUSIÓN:
The Code of Conduct for Responsible
Fisheries encourages countries and their
citizens to implement comprehensive
and integrated policies in the fisheries
and aquaculture sector with the aim of
improving and strengthening it. It is
expected that as the years go by,
responsible fishing will yield good
results in terms of a better situation of
the fishing populations, an improvement
in food security and that the opportunity
to acquire income will be continuous.
PERSONAL OPINION:
This code should be used as a reference
for all individuals who benefit from
fishing or aquaculture, as well as apply
what it dictates. Since this code is not
mandatory, it is not followed
independently in all fishing and
aquaculture countries, so I consider that
in order to achieve the objectives it
seeks, it should be mandatory by law.
