Healthcare should not be provided for free regardless of a person’s income.

The health of a
person is in their own hands and they should, therefore, be held accountable for that. Do you
agree or disagree?

People have conflicting opinions about whether or not to cater medical facilities free of charge
irrespective of a person’s financial ability. While acquiescing that providing healthcare to its
citizens is a legitimate function of a government, I concur that health services should not be
subsidized for free and each person ought to lay out for the medical bills on their own.
On one hand, implementing a free and high-quality healthcare system for every citizen is just
simply out of the question. If a hospital gives an equal medical treatment for free to every
patient, including those suffering from cancers or chronic diseases, the chances are there will
be a fiscal deficit and a doctor shortage burdening on the government, thereby diminishing the
quality and standards of the health services. The government budget is supposed to be
earmarked for the improvements in the medical infrastructure facility rather than catering for
every patient with a substandard healthcare system, as quality needs to be prioritized over
quantity. In addition, there is a likelihood that some people will take advantage of the free of
charge treatment policy and utilise more healthcare resources than necessary.
On the other hand, people should be in charge of taking care of their health and pay for their
own healthcare rather than waiting for the free medical subsidies provided by the government.
Under a free healthcare system funded by its citizens’ taxes, people, who work diligently to get
their medical services, are forced to pay for those who are unemployed and have a lower
income. Besides, when it comes to workplace accidents or traffic incidents, the party that
should hold the responsibility of recompensing for damages is the insurance company or the
person who is at fault and directly involved in the accident. In other words, there is no reason
for the government to pay the full coverage as it is only a fault of individuals. And above all,
when the government do not provide the medical care gratis to everyone, people are bound to
be more conscious about their well- being and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
In a nutshell, I believe that a free medical system should not be instituted for sake of the
governance of the healthcare industry and to incentivise people to be more mindful of their
health condition.
