What is
IELTS Academic is accepted for education purposes by
schools, universities and colleges in countries namely the
UK, the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand.

IELTS? IELTS General Training is accepted for immigration and work


visa purposes for countries namely Canada, Australia and
New Zealand.

Test Format Score Guide

IELTS consists of 4 sections focusing on four individual IELTS Score is valid for two years and it is represented in
skills. These sections and skills are: bands. The score is awarded from a scale of 1 to 9 in half-
point increments. Each section is scored on a band scale of
1 to 9 including the overall score which is the average of the
scores of four sections.

Both the versions, Academic and General Training have
same listening and speaking sections. But, the reading and 0 Did not attempt
writing sections differ. the test

For listening, reading and writing sections you get separate


question booklets and answer sheets. Speaking section is a
face-to-face interview with an examiner.

Listening and Reading sections are graded quite straight-forward. 1 mark is awarded to each correct response and 0 for an
incorrect response. There is no negative marking. These marks/ raw score out of 40 are then converted on the scale of 1-9.

The IELTS test results are issued 13 days after the
test. At some test centres candidates can collect
their results on the 13th day; at other test centres
results are mailed to candidates on the 13th day.
Test centres are not permitted to give results out
over the phone or by fax or email.

TEST DAY TIPS


Ø The total test time for Listening, Reading and Writing is 2 hours 30 minutes and you do not get a break in between the test
before which you have process for seating arrangement. So, make sure you have proper rest and have eaten proper food (not
something that might make you feel lethargic).

Ø Drink adequate amount of water. You are allowed to carry a transparent bottle in the exam hall.

Ø Wear comfortable clothing while appearing for the Listening, Reading and Writing test to avoid distractions. On the day of
speaking test, try coming in a little formal attire (note that you are not judged on your clothing but it will make you feel more
confident).

Ø Make sure to carry a valid identity proof which is your “passport”.

Ø Search the location of your test centre a day prior to the test day. Reach your test centre at least half an hour before to the
reporting time.

Ø You can take pens, pencils, erasers inside the test room. For the speaking test, you can only carry your ID.

Ø Pay utmost attention to the instructions given at the test centre.
