(a) I- Section 100 mm × 200mm having 10mm flange thickness and 8 mm web
thickness.

E = 2 ×105 N/mm2 and α = 12 × 10−6 per 0 C. [16]

3. A thin cylindrical shell with following dimensions is filled with a liquid at atmo-
spheric pressure: Length = 1.2 m, external diameter = 20 cm, thickness of metal
= 8 mm. Find the value of the pressure exerted by the liquid on the walls of the
cylinder and the hoop stress induced if an additional volume of 25 cm3 of liquid is
pumped into the cylinder Take E = 2.1 × 105 N/mm2 and 1/m= 0.33. [16]

4. A simply supported beam carries a U.D.L. of intensity 2.5 kN/metre over entire
span of 5 meters. The cross-section of the beam is a T-section having the dimensions
Top flange: 125 mm cm × 25 mm
Web: 175 mm cm × 25 mm
Calculate the maximum shear stress for the section of the beam. [16]

10 kN at a distance of 1 m from the end A and a uniformly distributed load of 5
kN/m for a length of 2 m from the end B. If I = 10 × 106 m4 , Using Macaulay‘s
Method, Determine:

(a) Deflection at the mid-span,

(b) Maximum deflection, and
(c) Slope at the end A. [16]

7. A rod 12.5 mm in diameter is stretched 3.2 mm under a steady load of 10 kN. What
stress would be produced in the bar by a weight of 700 N, falling through 75 mm
before commencing to stretch, the rod being initially unstressed? The value of E
may be taken as 2.1 × 105 N/mm2 . [16]

8. (a) Write the lami’s equations for thick cylindrical shell and explain the terms.
(b) A thick spherical shell of 160 mm internal diameter is subjected toe an internal
pressure of 40 N/mm2 . Find the thickness of the shell, if the permissible tensile
