The Unique Value of NeuroTracker

Practical Implementation
Only 1 minute of instruction is needed for users
to be able to train on NeuroTracker
independently. 15 mins of testing is required for
a cognitive baseline, 1.5-3 hours of distributed
training is required for robust and long lasting
improvements in high level cognitive functions.
NeuroTracker is a quick, simple yet highly effective intervention to enhance cognitive function in all
elements of human performance (from rehabilitation to high end performance). The equipment
requirements are a computer or mobile device capable of running a web browser, stereoscopic 3D,
and the NeuroTracker software. A single NeuroTracker system can manage hundreds of users, and
a cloud version can support individual home training with remote monitoring. NeuroTracker
programs use adaptive learning according to scientifically designed algorithms that optimise
learning to each individual’s cognitive needs.

Significant Transfer Effects

Published studies, many using controls and placebo groups, demonstrate that 2
to 3 hours of NeuroTracker training provides significant measurable increases in
high level mental functions according to standardised neuropsychological tests.
Specifically these include executive function, processing speed, working memory
selective attention, sustained attention, divided attention, response control and
inhibition. From a broader standpoint, other studies have shown transfer gains in
the following human performance domains: motor-skills, motion perception,
decision-making, sports performance, and neuroplasticity.
The efficacy science behind NeuroTracker shows it to be an exemplary neuroscience tool due to
robust near transfer gains as well as evidence of far transfer. In a peer reviewed article
NeuroTracker was compared with other established cognitive interventions in terms of robustness
of transfer, longevity, side-effects, ethical issues and potential populations, concluding that it fulfils
a new criteria of a gold-standard cognitive enhancer.

Strong Relevance to Medical Conditions
The cognitive functions that NeuroTracker directly improves have been
established as critical elements across a wide range of medical
conditions. A robust range of independent research literature shows a
clear direct relevance of these functions in the following conditions:
healthy aging (including driving and fall risk), ADHD, Autism, Learning
Disabilities, mTBI, TBI, PTSD, MCI, dementia, Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Each of these conditions involve impairment in several of the cognitive functions that NeuroTracker
improves, and in many cases research shows that improving these functions delays the onset or
improves the symptoms of the actual condition. Furthermore, reduced brain plasticity is known to
be a fundamental factor in most conditions.

Valuable Cognitive Measurements

The NeuroTracker training technique is extremely simple, and so neutral to
cognitive biases such as culture or education. Results reveal new insights
into high level cognitive functions across all populations. Over 150,000
sessions have been analysed to date, including in many published studies,
which reveal the effects of a variety of human performance influences on baselines such as age,
occupation, neurobiological alterations and medical conditions. Furthermore many researchers in
divergent disciplines use NeuroTracker measures as an objective, specific benchmark to assess the
influences of medical conditions, trauma or fatigue on cognition. Though a much wider range of
studies are on-going or are being reviewed for publishing, already published studies include
NeuroTracker measures on the effects of,
 healthy aging  driving
 developmental aging  biological motion perception
 ADHD  neurofeedback
 Autism  exercise
 Learning Disabilities  motor-skills
 sports performance  surgical skills
 mTBI  dehydration
 vision  neuroplasticity

A unique measure is the NeuroTracker learning rate, which is typically
on the order of +50% gains after only 2 to 3 hours training. As the
training is free from technique or practice effects, this improvement
rate provides new findings on brain plasticity and cognitive
adaptability traits (a study on this featured on the Nature.com homepage) which is particularly
useful for gaining insight into the predicted responsiveness of individuals who are undergoing
cognitive interventions.

Intervention Complementarity
NeuroTracker training’s enhancements of levels of brain plasticity were
established in a peer reviewed study using detailed qEEG analyses. It revealed
that speeds of brain wave cycles were positively increased during resting state
throughout many areas of the brain, including executive function regions. Of
great theoretical interest, and alongside direct functional gains, this fundamental heightening of
brain state may enhance the efficacy of other cognitive interventions by increasing the underlying
learning and adaptive capacities of high level brain functions.
One compelling example of new research into this concept is an exploratory 14 month trial which
demonstrated that a relatively short training program of NeuroTracker has the potential to
significantly enhance the long term effects of leading pharmaceutical interventions for
neurobiological conditions such as MCI, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

NeuroTracker is a unique neuroscience application that is an ideal tool for

augmenting traditional medical interventions, rather than displacing or
competing with them. For example, the cognitive functions that NeuroTracker
improves are known to be critical in motor-skill rehabilitation. NeuroTracker
can provide cognitive measures at rest and show how they are disaffected
during motor-skill activity (while NeuroTracking), which can directly guide the
recovery intervention, and assess combined cognitive and physical recovery using a dual-task test
paradigm. As NeuroTracker requires only verbal responses from the user (no controllers or
equipment other than 3D glasses), it is practical for direct integration across a wide range of
interventions.

CogniSens is also developing software support to integration of
NeuroTracker with biometric devices and data management, for
example measuring the effects of Heart Rate Variability under
cognitive loads. This development will allow professional clients to
perform a range of biometric measurements correlated with real-time cognitive activity to advance
understanding of human mental and physiological functions across different populations. This has
already proven effective with neurofeedback interventions, which show two way transfer with the
effects of both neurofeedback and NeuroTracker being enhanced – also yielding new objective
measures on cognitive learning.

Evolving Science
NeuroTracker has been commercially developed through a technology transfer
partnership founded with the Visual Psychophysics and Perception Laboratory
at the University of Montreal. A first advantage of this partnership is that the
head of the laboratory, Prof. Faubert, a leading neuroscientist, is CSO of
CogniSens Inc. and ensures the scientific integrity of the NeuroTracker’s development. Secondly,
Prof. Faubert engages in a wide range of cutting-edge research in human perception and cognition
using NeuroTracker and other advanced technologies. Additionally, there are a wide range of
independent researchers using NeuroTracker across a variety of medical related disciplines, for
example several high-level studies on concussion. As it is now well established in the scientific
literature that NeuroTracker is a tool which can play a key role in uncovering new understanding
into human cognitive functions, research projects around the globe are expanding rapidly.

To support this movement, CogniSens Inc. has

established the non-profit CogniSens Applied
Research Centre (ARC). The ARC’s mission is to
demonstrate the ecological and scientific validity of new technologies relating to cognitive function,
mental readiness and human performance. A key aim is to facilitate applied research projects that
will be distinguished by their scientific relevance and strategic importance, supported by a strong
mix of ARC researchers and experts.

As a global driving force in the field of cognitive studies, the centre will bridge the gap between
research and real-life applications. ARC’s objectives are,

 Develop new applications to address unmet needs in cognitive function, mental readiness
and human performance
 Integrate CogniSens products with other leading
technologies and techniques to develop effective
diagnostic and treatment tools
 Employ rigorous scientific evaluations, including
standardized assessments, protocols and objective data
analytics to conduct/lead projects and ensure the
scientific validity of the studies
 Validate the effectiveness of new technologies by using
appropriate transfer measurements
 Create a forum to share best practices and latest
scientific findings with our collaboration partners and
the broader scientific community

This committed support to large scale research brings unique value to NeuroTracker clients, in that
new ground-breaking methodologies, applications, technology integrations and understandings of
measurement data will be discovered in the coming years and continue to evolve long term.
