Tunnel short story questions-Gurnoor Dhillon:

1. How old is Kent, the narrator of the story?

Kent is 16 years old
2. How old is Ib?
Ib also known as Elizabeth is six and one quarter years old
3. Why doesn't Kent want to go in the tunnel?
Kent remembers how he and his two friends used to come here and because of the Blackwater
bloodsuckers and because he told Ib he wont fit. ken is also claustrophobic.
4. Why do the "girls" in the tunnel let Ib leave the circle?
At first the girls did not let Ib go until it was her turn but when Kent called out “Elizabeth “ they
let her go.
5. At one point in the story there is a "flashback" to another time and place. What happens
in the flashback?
At the beginning kent has a flashback of how he used to come to the tunnel before with his two
friends and how there were Blackwater Bloodsuckers. He even stated the time when they were
playing a game and Jeff yelled “machine gun attack” and Kent threw himself in the bank.
6. Explain why you think the author used first person point of view?
I think the author used first person POV to show Kent’s life and experiences and how the story
is based off him and how he is a sixteen year old working as a babysitter and how he
remembers his past in the tunnel when he and jeff and Danielle used to go there at one time.
7. What evidence is there that something strange or unnatural occurs in the story? What do
you think happens in the tunnel?  Try to break down “Tunnel” identifying what you think
are the:  exposition  rising action  climax  falling action  resolution/denouement
From my perspective I feel like there might be a ritual or something done in the tunnel because
Kent remembers when he went in the tunnel and heard the same voices and finally than Jeff
called him by his real name to get him out of there. I feel like the tunnel’s point is to get one to
say the real name of the person to get them out of the circle because that is who they are. The
exposition of the story is when we are told about Elizabeth and Kent and who they are what
they like to do. The rising action would be when the conflict starts to develop and when
Elizabeth sees and questions about the tunnel. The climax would be the part when Kent reaches
the other side and called out for Ib but there was no sign of her. The falling action would be
when Kent finds the Wanda barbie doll and hears Ib and the resolution would be when he calls
her real name and she is freed and he looks one last time at the tunnel before leaving.
