• 13 off-shore production platforms
• 3 on-shore bases

P r o je c t D e s c r ip t io n ENI required a private/secure VSAT network solution to satisfy both Corporate applications
& R e q u ir e m e n t s and Crew Welfare communications needs for all of its production platforms in the Gulf of
Mexico. The network needed to provide enough bandwidth to adequately support both
Corporate and Crew requirements, while placing priority on certain applications.

S o lu t i o n P r o v i d e d P r iv a t e T D M A N e t w o r k : ITC Global developed a custom private TDMA network for

ENI that combined the bandwidth for both corporate and crew applications into a
single network cloud. By layering advanced Quality of Service controls with a highly
granular dynamic bandwidth allocation system, the ENI Private VSAT network delivered
enhanced performance to both corporate applications; as well as, casual internet use
for improved crew welfare. By combining the two networks into a single shared cloud,
both corporate and crew applications benefitted from higher available burst rates.
M a x im iz e d B a n d w id t h E ffi c ie n c y : The ENI GoM VSAT network was built with a total
bandwidth pool of 4 Mbps outbound (Hub to Remote) and 2 Mbps inbound (Remote to
Hub). Through the use of Adaptive Coding Modulation (ACM) in the satellite modem,
ITC Global was able to increase outbound carrier performance to speeds of up to 6.5
Mbps delivering higher throughput for the cost of 4 Mbps service. Additionally, ENI
specified minimum bandwidth allocations for each site in the network to ensure each
platform would receive adequate bandwidth even during periods of high network-
wide usage. With the minimum per platform allocations in mind, each platform was
designed to intuitively share bandwidth between, not only other sites, but between
different classes of service (i.e. corporate applications, Video, Voice and Casual Internet
Use). The design basically allows for platforms to burst into each other’s unused
bandwidth automatically while prioritizing access based on ENI’s pre-defined service
criteria. By allocating bandwidth automatically every 125 milliseconds and doing so in
accordance with ENI’s application guidelines, the ENI GOM VSAT Network has proven to
be one of the most efficient VSAT networks deployed in the GoM today.
T e le p o r t R e d u n d a n c y : The ITC Global solution incorporated the ability to manually
migrate ENI’s entire VSAT network to an alternate teleport in the event of hub failure or
catastrophic event. Teleport migration does not require a technician to be deployed to
the remote platforms or any customer intervention on-site. During teleport migration
testing with ENI, ITC measured network migration times at approximately 2 minutes
total network service impact.
S e c u r e M P L S N e t w o r k : ENI required the GoM VSAT network be directly integrated
with ENI corporate infrastructure. ITC Global built and maintains an MPLS network
specifically for ENI with paths established between ENI’s Collocation facility and both ITC
Teleports servicing the ENI Private VSAT Network. Through the use of dynamic routing,
the MPLS network will route traffic dynamically and securely back to ENI’s corporate
infrastructure instantly.
ITC Global directly designed the network and procured, tested, installed and
commissioned all VSAT equipment, space segment, and network management as part
of a turnkey solution.

typically are more mobile in nature and require a high degree of flexibility.
Production facilities (FPSOs) tend to be relatively fixed locations but require
significantly higher multi-megabit per second data rates. The ITC Global
solution needed to accommodate this full range of requirements.

S o lu t i o n P r o v i d e d A d v a n c e d V S A T C a r r ie r -in -C a r r ie r S o lu t io n : ITC Global developed a

customized Comtech Advanced VSAT network solution to meet the TOTAL
requirement for multiple site types and bandwidth data rates. The base
platform used carrier-in-carrier technology to maximize customer data rates,
while minimizing space segment costs. We looked beyond just the VSAT
solution and designed a complete network architecture in order to match the
level of security and performance expected by TOTAL corporate Information
Technology. The solution addresses both Onshore and Offshore site types. The
solutions can be transported to operate in a variety of international locations.
O n g o in g S e r v ic e I m p r o v e m e n t : We proposed to TOTAL a TDMA solution in
order to replace the old mesh network. We have worked to improve the link
budget and propose a shared solution to limit the dimension of the remote
antenna.
E ffi c ie n t U s e o f B a n d w id t h : One of our key objectives in providing the TOTAL
solutions is to maximize the user throughput, while minimizing the cost
associated with the space segment required. This requires a constant focus on
increasing the Mbps available, relative to the MHz of space segment consumed.
The carrier-in-carrier solution, available by deploying Comtech Advanced
VSATs, is the most efficient solution in order to optimize the point-to-point
links. However, we have also deployed a Vipersat TDMA service over Africa
for the TOTAL Marketing Network in order to share the bandwidth between
the different remote sites. Through regular consultation with the client, we
are able to update the technical approach we employ to provide the best
possible service for each type of customer remote site.

S o lu t i o n P r o v i d e d O n g o in g S t r a t e g ic Te c h n o lo g y A d v is o r : ITC Global started working with SAIPEM in 2004.

Together with the customer information technology department, we acted as a primary
telecommunications partner and advisor in developing the company’s standards for services
related to satellite communications. Periodically we review the client’s requirements and we
evaluate new technologies, with the aim of improving quality of services. Moreover every 4
months we organize a workshop to review the performance of the network, propose new
implementations and review any major faults.
C o m p le x M u lt i-S it e T y p e N e t w o r k W it h S C P C & T D M A Te c h n o lo g ie s : The Global SAIPEM
VSAT network uses more than 145 MHz of space segment in both C and Ku-band across
different satellites and regions. The SAIPEM network requires different technologies to
support a wide range of services and site types. ITC Global provided different solutions
tailored to each type of customer site.
S C P C S it e s : Generally branch offices and large vessels use traditional SCPC technology, from
Comtech, to assure the highest level of service for very high capacity links and for multiple
clients on the same terminal. A drill-ship or semi-submersible rig with 700 people on-
board will utilize up to 8 Mbps of bandwidth full duplex. ITC Global assures these capacities
even during ocean transfers thanks to continuous remote site support and space capacity
planning coordinated with the customer.
T D M A S it e s : For some geographical areas, where multiple on-shore and off-shore terminals
can share capacity, we implemented a TDMA solution to achieve better bandwidth
efficiencies. For TDMA networks we utilized the Comtech Vipersat/Advanced VSAT platform.
Thanks to the use of Adaptive Coding Modulation (ACM), ITC Global was able to increase
outbound carrier performance to speeds of up to 20 Mbps delivering higher throughput for
the cost of 15 MHz of space segment.
