Use reflexive
pronouns to create a
meaningful discourse.

At the end of the lesson, the student is expected to:

Identify reflexive pronoun in a sentence;

Use reflexive pronouns in a meaningful

discourse; and

Appreciate the importance of reflexive

pronoun in a discourse.

1
Despite of my hectic schedule, I am able to book
a flight going to Bukidnon for a vacation. Yet, I do
not want to go by myself, would you like to come
with me?

I do not know what you’re saying.

Duh! All I need is your answer.

Are you free this weekend?

2
Pronoun is a word that function as a noun phrase used in
a discourse. It has different types and one of these is the
reflexive pronoun. This is a bit different from other kinds of
pronouns. Its concept is certainly not difficult to master. It can be
used in speaking and in writing.

Reflexive Pronoun refers, or reflects back, to the subject

of the sentence, indicating that the same person or thing is
involved. A reflexive pronoun always adds information to a
sentence.

myself yourself himself

herself itself ourselves

yourselves themselves
3
Singular: myself - yourself - himself - herself - itself

Plural: ourselves - yourselves - themselves

Examples:
1. I give the test myself to the students.
2. You must not blame yourself for this mess.
3. Jerry has given himself a treat to go to Singapore.
4. Jean reads the story certainly to herself.
5. The examination for me is quietly easy itself.
6. We do not want to go out, so we have fixed the dinner for
ourselves.
7. You make yourselves comfortable in my home.
8. The football team led themselves to victory
9. She assured us that she would lock the building herself.
10. We voted to give ourselves a raise this year.

4
Reflexive pronouns have two functions:

1. They act as intensifiers, following a noun or pronoun as

would any appositive:

I myself wrote that check.

I wrote that check myself.
She assured us that she herself would lock the building.

2. They are more commonly used, however, as objects of

verbs, verbals (e.g., infinitives), or prepositions when the
receiver of the action or the object of the preposition is the
same as the subject of the verb in the clause:

I gave myself a treat.

Before the meeting, she allotted herself enough time to get to the
office and park her car.
In every town we visited, she bought lavish gifts for her children
and herself.

In each of these sentences, the reflexive pronoun

"reflects back" to the subject of the sentence and is the
object of an action verb, an infinitive, or a preposition.

5
Direction: Circle the reflexive pronoun in each sentence
below.

Example: He tells himself not to become foolish again.

1. Make sure to remind yourself of the things you need to do.

2. She thought to herself while she was in the library.
3. I saw myself in the mirror.
4. We blamed ourselves for the mistake.
5. Can you help yourselves?
6. They cannot look after themselves.
7. Why do you blame yourself for everything?
8. Please help yourself to get some food.
9. Do not be ashamed of yourself.
10. I bought a gift for myself.

6

pronoun to complete the sentence.

7

asked.
Korean Drama
Are you one of the millennials who loves K-drama? Do you
spend too much time watching its episodes by yourself in TV,
YouTube or cellphone?
Indeed, survey says that K-dramas are the most watched
telenovelas by the netizens nowadays. Even its own language
has been imitated itself. In addition, members of the society
has already embraced themselves in style, fashion and food
too.
Korean artists also capture the hearts of many. They have
been loved by their own fans because of their extraordinary
talents and good attitudes. I myself too have Korean idols.
For me, it is not about the look that strucks me. Rather, it is
how their characters mold me to become a better person.
Thus, to have an idol is good. But we must put limitation on it
and not to forget our own responsibilities in life.
