ATTENTIVE LISTENING

SUMMARY:
Attentive listening plays a vital role in many situations. It is especially crucial when one
listen to informative talk and has to take down notes or when on is given instructions or
directions which he/she is expected to follow. Then, we have two approaches than can help our
students to develop their attentive listening are aural discrimination and aural comprehension.
Aural discrimination is the ability to differentiate among the critical sounds of English while the
Aural Comprehension means understanding rather than merely distinguishing on differentiating
sounds. After all, the ultimate goal of attentive listening is comprehension of the message.

REFLECTION:
As Francois de La Rochefoucauld wrote: "To listen closely and reply well is the highest
perfection we are able to attain in the art of conversation." Actively listening to what the other
person is saying reduces the chance of misunderstandings. It involves reflecting and
confirming that each person can comprehend what is being said, so that the facts and concerns
are accurately heard.
