CRITICAL LISTENING: EVALUATIVE

SUMMARY:
The evaluating stage is the listening stage during which the listener critically assesses the
information they received from the speaker. The listener assesses the information they have
gathered from the speaker both qualitative and quantitative. Calls for higher level questions
which in turn develop higher thinking skills. Typically, we also weigh up the pros and cons of an
argument, determining whether it makes sense logically as well as whether it is helpful to us.

REFLECTION:
We need to engage in careful listening in order to understand and evaluate the message. We
are constantly engaging in interpretation and meaning-making as we listen, and our listening
engagement relies heavily on our environmental contexts and our listening goals. Before we
begin to make a decision, we need to make sure that we fully understand the whole perspective
of the situation before accepting or rejecting it.
