I. Introductory Concept

Validity of Evidence

People interact and gather information through communication.

A good communication always involves a Good Speaker and a Good Listener. Active listening is the key to all
effective communication and a key to building a strong relationship with good conversation among others. Without the
ability to listen effectively, messages are easily misunderstood.
Active listening means hearing with proper understanding of the message that is heard, and by asking questions the
speaker can ensure whether his/her message is understood or not by the receiver in the same terms as intended by the
speaker.
Awareness of your own interaction with other people is also step in improving your communication and judgment
skills--you must always accept responsibility for your own behaviour and do not fear apologizing for errors in judgment or
insensitive actions, because determination and self-awareness will make your desire to improve your communication and
judgment skills a reality.
We are awakened by different news and updates from television, radio, newspaper, magazines and from
people/peers and we tend to give opinions based on careful and not so careful thoughts—and then realized that in order
to make judgment, we must look for valid evidence.
This Learning Activity Sheet will help students judge the validity of information based on evidence.

STUDY GUIDE!

To evaluate evidence, you must check if:

a. the evidence is up-to-date
b. the evidence is relevant
c. the evidence is sufficient
d. the example is similar to other examples you have chosen
e. the example present an extreme or a typical situation
f. the example illustrate your point
g. the source of the data is trustworthy
To determine the reliability and validity of articles you have read or heard, you must:
a. look for the authors credentials (for scholarly articles, this is usually pretty simple)
b. review the article’s contents
c. examine the evidence
d. determine bias
An evidence is valid if it is:
a. having some foundation; based on truth
b. legally acceptable
How do you determine the validity of evidence to back up your conclusion?
1. The evidence consists of prepositions of fact which are related to other prepositions, a proposed
conclusion.
2. The essential relationship of prepositions which is evidence of the proposition which is the proposed
conclusion is relevancy.
What is meant by valid conclusion?
 Conclusion Validity is the degree to which the conclusion we reach is credible or believable.
RULES OF EVIDENCE
 Admissible
-able to be admitted or allowed
-capable of being allowed or considered
 Authentic
-real or genuine: not copied or false
-true and accurate
 Complete/ Sufficient
-having all necessary parts: not lacking anything
 Reliable
-able to be trusted to do or provide what is needed: able to be relied on
 Believable
-capable of being believed specially as within the range of known possibility or probability
 Current
-happening or existing now: belonging to or existing in the present time
-aware of what is happening in a particular area of activity
Credible Evidence
-evidence that’s likely to be believed. And just as credible means believable
What makes a claim credible?
-credible sources, therefore must be reliable source that provide information that one can believe
to be true.
-using evidence that does not come from a credible source of information will not convince your
your reader that your claim is plausible or even correct.
How do you know if the evidence is relevant?
-evidence is `relevant’ when it has applicability to the issues presented. Relevancy is that quality in
evidence that makes it properly applicable to the truth or falsity of matters at issue. A fact is rele-
vant when it helps to prove an issue.
What is the importance of validity?
-validity is important because it determines what survey questions to use, and helps ensure that
that researchers are using questions that truly measure the issues of importance.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

Judge the validity of the evidence listened to (EN9LC-IVh-2.15)
Unpacked Learning Competencies:
a. Determine the validity of the evidence listened to
b. Know the importance of the validity of evidence
c. Identify valid and reliable information
d. Identify evidence from a listening activity
e. Recognize the rules of evidence

III. Activities
 Task 1 LISTEN!
Find an old or new local or international newspaper and look for an interesting topic.
Ask your parent/guardian to read the topic of your choice, close your eyes and listen as they read it.

Remember:
When reading or listening, you must determine if the article is from a reliable source and provides
information that one can believe to be true, and presents valid evidence

 Task 2 PUT INTO WORDS!

Write an argumentative essay about the valid and reliable information that you have heard from the first
activity, and cite some evidence.
Be guided by the following questions:
1. What is the topic all about?
2. In the first activity, what are the words or phrases that you find valid, relevant and reliable?
3. Why is it important to determine/judge the validity of evidence listened to?
4. How was the validity of evidence presented?
5. Which part of the article was the validity of evidence presented?
Note: Write your argumentative essay in a colored bond paper and put some arts

Remember:
When writing an argument, you must determine if the evidence is credible, accurate and reliable. If
the evidence does not meet these criteria, then your argument is more likely to fail.

 Task 3 RECORD ME!

Read and record what you have written using the Voice Record application in your phone.
Note: Send your voice record through Messenger

Remember:
When recording your voice, greater consideration needs to be given to the factors that influence the
quality of voice and speech recordings.
