DCIT 65 Social and Professional Issues

Module No.4 Privacy Protection and Law

Assessment no. 4

Instruction: Answer the following question based on what you understand while reading and
studying the module 4.

1. Why do employers monitor workers? Do you think they should be able to do so? Why or why
not?

Because employers need to ensure that they are paying their workers by doing their jobs
and not by freeloading. Because there are some cases where most of employees do not use
their office time productively, even they have finished their tasks or no tasks assigned yet, they
are prohibited from using the office’s resources. For example, browsing the web for their own
interest or scrolling at social media during work hours. These kinds of things were a big waste of
resources like internet connection, electricity, and especially time and money. Employees must
do things that will benefit for an organization or company, instead of browsing and scrolling
social media during vacant hours, they can recheck their works if there are some unseen errors
to avoid mistakes. If there are supervisors in a workplace, they can be sure that their employees
are doing their jobs correctly and productively and there will be no waste of time and energy,
more importantly the company will benefit if the staff are doing their job well.

2. Do you think that law enforcement agencies should be able to use advanced surveillance
cameras and data from vehicle data recorders in a court of law? Why or why not?

For me, they should implement this kind of surveillance. Because like having
surveillance cameras and access to vehicle data records will give more security and safety to
people but less on privacy. On the other hand, advanced surveillance will help solve cases
regarding car related crime incidents and even car accidents. There are some good things in
permitting this plan like, surveillance cameras can avoid crimes and terrorism and (ERDs) can
monitor a vehicle’s status and location. The downside of this plan is that, it diminishes an
individual’s privacy and complicate the issue of how much information should be captured about
people’s private lives.

3. Do you think that the installation of stalker software on suspects’ cell phones should be
authorized for law enforcement agencies? If so, under what circumstances should such use be
permitted? If not, why not?

I think it should be permitted depending on the suspect’s profile. Suspect’s profile

meaning if the suspect is known for his illegal transactions for example drugs stalker software is
a huge help to access information to someone the suspect is transacting. But putting this kind of
software especially in a high-profile suspect wasn’t a complete plan. Because this kind of people
have minions who often do the dirty job for them.

For me permitting this kind of approach might not help law enforcement agencies.
Because there are some cases that a suspect has an inside contact with cooperatives on the
other side if this kind of stalking of suspects will be permitted by the law, it would be useless if
the people knew about this kind of law. The suspects’ will be cautious knowing that he’s being
watched. Moreover, putting such software to stalk someone being suspicious was an act of
invasion of privacy.
