Lesson
Topic: Listening to Determine Worth of Ideas

Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret the

messages in the communication process. It is the key to all effective
communication. Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily
misunderstood. When you engage in listening you are doing so for many
different reasons depending upon the goals in which you are trying to
achieve. When you bought expensive items, such as a new cell phone, or an
iPad, you probably did some research beforehand and listen closely to the
salesperson when you went to compare brands. That scenario is an example
of critical listening.

This module will help you understand what critical listening is and its
importance in determining the worth/value of an idea from the text listened
to.

What’s In
Activity 1:
The following pictures show some of the famous and expensive items.
When buying some of these items, what do you usually consider? Do you do
some research before buying or you just rely on what the commercial
models said about these products?

What’s New

Listening to Determine Worth of Ideas

Determining the worth of ideas in a spoken text or a written material
read aloud requires critical or evaluative listening. Critical listening means
making judgement about how good or bad the idea is. It means assessing
and evaluating the truth of what is being spoken or read aloud. It means
being able to discern the strong and weak points of an idea or an argument.
Critical listening is listening to evaluate a message for purposes of
accepting or rejecting. When engaging in critical listening, you are also
critically thinking. You are making judgements based on what you see, hear
and read. Your goal is to evaluate the message that is being sent and decide
for yourself if the information is valid, and based on facts not on opinions.
To listen critically, you must listen closely to what is being said or
read, while weighing its worth and logic with what you know to be true or
correct.
You have learned from the previous lessons that to evaluate the
relevance and validity of an idea, the following are used as basis.
1. Your personal observation or experience
2. Personal interview with knowledgeable persons or authoritative
sources
3. Current publications and other reference materials
Your evaluation must be based on fact not on opinion. The following
pointers may help you give a logical evaluation.
1. A fact is a statement known to be true or which can be proven to be
true.
2. An opinion is a statement that tells what someone believes to be true.
An opinion may or may not be correct.
3. The opinion of an authority on a subject may be believed.
4. Facts are more reliable as basis because they can be defended.

Why is critical listening important?

Being a critical listener comes down to using your critical thinking

skills. These skills help us in analyzing the speaker’s message for
authenticity and truth. We should also analyze the speaker’s ideas to
determine the authenticity of the message.

What makes a good critical listener?
Being a critical listener can be improved by employing one or more
strategies to help the listener analyze the message: recognize the difference
between facts and opinions, uncover assumptions given by the speaker, be
open to new ideas, use both reason and common sense when analyzing
messages, relate new ideas to old ones, and take useful notes.

Michael Jackson

There's a place in your heart

And I know that it is love
And this place could be much
Brighter than tomorrow
And if you really try
You'll find there's no need to cry
In this place you'll feel
There's no hurt or sorrow

There are ways to get there

If you care enough for the living
Make a little space
Make a better place

Heal the world

Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me

If you want to know why

There's love that cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares of joyful giving
If we try we shall see
In this bliss we cannot feel
Fear of dread
We stop existing and start living

The it feels that always

Love's enough for us growing
So make a better world
Make a better place

Heal the world

Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me

And the dream we were conceived in

Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify its soul
Though it's plain to see
This world is heavenly
Be god's glow

We could fly so high

Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel you are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we cry happy tears
See the nations turn their swords into plowshares

We could really get there

If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space
To make a better place

Heal the world

Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me

There are people dying

If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me

You and for me
