What I Need to Know

After going through this module, you are expected to

1. define what Communication is;
2. determine the importance of Interpersonal Communication; and
3. employ a Variety of Strategies for Effective Interpersonal Communication
(Interview, Dialog, Conversation).

What I Know

Directions: Read each statement carefully. Write TRUE if the statement is

correct and FALSE if the statement is incorrect.

___________1. Speaking or communicating is a one-way process.

___________2. Avoid correcting the speaker while he or she is talking.

Reserve the feedback at the end of his/her turn.

___________3. Communication is normally intentional.

___________4. It is important that we discern other speakers’ signal of their

desire to communicate.

___________5. If you already consider yourself as a good communicator, then

how you engage does not need to change.

1
Lesson Employ a Variety of Strategies
for Effective Interpersonal Communication
1 (Interview, Dialog, Conversation)

What’s In

Today, Who Is a Stranger?

Directions: Read and analyze the given situation. Assess yourself

through responding to the following questions below.

When you were a young child, your parents and/or

caregivers probably cautioned you not to speak to strangers.
However, travel opportunities and social networks such as
Facebook make interacting with strangers much more
commonplace, even ordinary.

Processing Questions:

1. To what extent, if any, are you more willing to interact with a stranger
online than at the mall or when on a trip? Explain.

2. To what extent, if any, do you think parents or caregivers should

restrict the time young children spend interacting online? To what
extent, if any, do you think you should limit the time you spend in
social networks?

3. In your opinion, which is more likely to result in a lasting

interpersonal relationship—a friendship that begins online, an “old-
fashioned” pen-pal type of friendship, or a relationship that begins
with both parties face-to-face? Explain your answer with reasons.

2
What’s New

COMMUNICATION On the Go!

Directions: Watch and listen carefully to this short video clip on YouTube
(https://tinyurl.com/bn35mr7k ) entitled “The Art of Communication”.
Answer the following process questions below.

Source: https://tinyurl.com/bn35mr7k

Processing Questions:

1. What is the short video clip all about?

2. Do you think communication is important? Why?

The communication brings people together, closer to each other.

The communication is an important management function
closely associated with all other managerial functions. It bridges
the gap between individuals and groups through flow of
information and understanding between them.

3
What Is It

What is Communication?

Communication is our link to humanity. In its broadest sense, it is a

process involving the deliberate or accidental transfer of meaning. One
person does or says something, thereby engaging in symbolic behavior,
while others observe what was done or said and attribute meaning to it.
Whenever you observe or give meaning to behavior, communication is taking
place. It is whether verbal or nonverbal allows us to engage and to socialize.

7 Cs of Effective Communication

1. Completeness  Complete information is needed before

sending a message
 Learn to answer the WH- questions

2. Conciseness  Message is short and concise (direct to

the point)

3. Consideration  Consider the background of the

receiver (mood, race, status, gender,
and among others)

4. Concreteness  The message must be factual and in

real-life situations

5. Courtesy  Respect one’s culture, background,

and personal attributes

6. Clearness
 The message is simple, clear and
specific.
7. Correctness
 Correctness in language use and
grammar adds credibility.

4
Types of Communicative Strategies

Communication Strategies are blueprints for how the information

will be exchanged. These are used by learners to overcome problems of
conveying intended meaning.

1. Nomination
The ability of taking attention of the learners and trying to
commence or to begin or even propose speaker’s idea in a
conversation.

Example:
How’s the weather there?
What’s the latest news?

2. Restriction
A strategy that constrains or restricts the response of the other
person involved in the communication situation.

Example:
Homily of a priest in a mass
Do you agree that students should go to school despite
the pandemic crisis? Yes or No.

3. Topic Control
Instances when a conversation is bound only to given issues. It is
an important communicative strategy. It

 Inhibits unnecessary interruptions

 Shifts in a certain dialogue
 Contributes to the progression of definite topic/s in a
particular discussion

4. Topic Shifting
We shift a topic when we want to avoid a conversation or topic

5. Termination
Refers to practicing closing a topic or ending the conversation

Speakers should be expected to:

 Be more aware of when to commence and when to conclude; and
 Know when to speak and when to be quiet.

5
Kinds of Communication
There are many kinds of communication. We distinguish one type of
communication from others based on the number of persons involved, the
formality of the interaction, and the opportunity to give and receive
feedback.

INTERPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION is
INTRAPERSONAL the ongoing, ever-
COMMUNICATION changing process that
occurs when you think occurs when you
or talk to yourself, it interact with another
requires only a single person, forming a
communicator—you! dyad, which is defined
as two people
communicating with
each other.

Interaction Model of Interpersonal Communication

7
Strategies for Effective Interpersonal Communication
1. Be open to and ask for feedback.
The point of a conversation is an exchange of ideas between two
people, not a one-way street.

2. Never talk over people.

This not only shows a lack of listening skills, but it also shows
you don’t value what the speaker has to say. Alternatively, if you find
that others always talk over you, consider that you might be long-
winded and think about how you can tighten up your message.

3. Don’t finish other people’s sentences.

You may think you’re sending the message that you “get” what
they’re saying before they finish saying it; however, you’re telling them
that whatever they’re saying isn’t worth listening to.

4. Paraphrase.
When someone asks you to do something, repeat back to that
person what they asked you to do in your own language. You’ve
proven you not only listened to what they said, you also understood
what they were asking for.

5. Listen actively.
Have you ever been involved in a conversation where you can
tell the other person is thinking about something else or isn’t even
hearing what you’re saying? Don’t be that person. Let the speaker
know you are connecting with them by nodding or responding when
they ask a question. Keep your focus on the conversation at hand.

6. Maintain eye contact.

Part of active listening is maintaining good eye contact. By doing
so, you avoid being distracted by what is going on around you and you
give the speaker non-verbal acknowledgment that you are listening.
It’s okay to look away once in a while; staring intently at the person
you’re speaking with can make that person uncomfortable.

7. Be aware of your body language.

Without saying a word, you can speak volumes with your body
language. Are your arms crossed? You aren’t open to another person’s
idea. Are your hands on your hips? You’re being defensive. Be aware
of what you are physically doing while you’re listening and speaking.

8
8. Avoid unnecessary conversation fillers
Like “ums,” “uhs” and “likes.” They distract the listener from
hearing your message. Think about what you’re going to say before
you say it.

9. Be respectful of other people’s thoughts and opinions.

While you may disagree with what the other party is saying,
remember that (as difficult as it may be) they have a right to their own
opinion. If you find yourself ready to pounce on the person you’re
speaking with because their opinion is not in line with yours, wait
until they’re done speaking and express your thoughts on the subject
in a non-confrontational manner. Even if, in the end, you wind up
agreeing to disagree, you both walk away with a different viewpoint on
a subject.

10. Practice.
You know what they say: practice makes perfect. With the tips
above in mind, attend various community networking events that
require you to participate so you can practice good body language or
active listening. Pay special attentions to how well others
communicate and emulate those you feel succeed at paraphrasing or
maintaining eye contact.
