What I Need to Know

As readers, you must know how to identify the general statement and point out the
paragraph's main idea. It is also equally important to analyze the supporting details' connection
with the general statement as reinforcement of the ideas or concepts expressed. These two
basics – general statement (topic sentence) and supporting details – develop into a very good
and comprehensive paragraph. Understanding these two basics of any written compositions
help your reading comprehension.
This module is designed to guide you on how to identify the topic sentence and its
supporting details; thus, at the end of this module, you are expected to:
a. Define general statement;
b. Differentiate the general statement from supporting details;
c. Determine a central idea of the text read;
d. Cite evidence to support a general statement, and
e. Demonstrate good comprehension of the text by identifying the topic, topic
sentence, and supporting details (EN7RC-IV-g.10.4)

What I Know

Directions: Read and analyze the questions. Choose the letter of the best answer. (Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.)

1. Which of the following statements best describe textual evidence?

A. It is evidence mentioned in the text;
B. It is the direct quotes from the passage;
C. Paraphrased from the author's words;
D. All of the above
2. Read the short passage and answer the question that follows:

Reading is a lifetime process. Some youngsters first listen to bedtime stories and then
begin reading some in children’s books. Thus, they build at an early age a reading readiness
that develops into a reading aptitude. Others, unfortunately, never see a book around the
house and become allergic to print! The tragic results of this are millions of illiterate young
men and women, who could not pass a simple reading test. Not only do we need good readers
to make us a strong nation, but we also want every boy and girl to be personally successful
in schoolwork and in his or her future occupation as an adult.
-Reading Is a Lifetime Education

What is the general statement of the short passage above?

A. Reading readiness develops into reading aptitude.
B. Reading is a lifetime process.

5. Read the short paragraph and answer the question that follows:

The Peakview Café is a place for people to unwind and enjoy nature. It is located
away from the noise and perplexities in the city. The symphonic sounds of birds, the
rustling of leaves, and the calming breeze of fresh air relieve the stress away. The
site is a gateway to new experience every busy individual would dreamt of.
Zamboanga City, known as the Latin City, is located in Western Mindanao.

Lesson
GENERAL STATEMENT and
1 SUPPORTING DETAIL
A paragraph is a series of related sentences that develop the main idea, thought, or
concept. The sentence, the basic unit of the paragraph, should be clearly stated to exhibit
clear thought. Coherence is important, so each sentence should be organized to focus only on
one single topic.
The basic structure consists of the topic, general statement or topic sentence, and
supporting details. These three are fundamental in delivering the main idea.

What's In
Written compositions are surrounded by ideas, concepts, and emotions embodied
within a general statement, also known as the topic sentence. The topic sentence could either
be found in the beginning, within, or at the end of the paragraph. All other sentences further
elaborate this called the supporting details. The supporting details clarify, explain, describe,
or illustrate the message of the paragraph's main idea.

Activity I: Plot the Common

Directions: Read the short paragraph and answer the questions below. (Use another sheet of
paper for your answer.)

We like going to historical places around Zamboanga City to see things and meet
people. We always love to visit the Fort Pilar National Museum to see the marine life, including
some antiques and old artifacts. We also love to see the picturesque Fort Pilar Shrine, where
many people from near and distant lands visit, especially during the feast's celebration every
October 12. My friends and I find it exciting to meet people of different ethnicities and tribes
to learn about their culture. Indeed, going to places is a whole lot of fun.

2. What do you think is the difference between the topic and the general statement? General
statement and supporting details?
3. What is/are the functions of supporting details?

What Is It

A paragraph is a series of related sentences that develop into a unit of thought or

concept. Its structure comprises three basic elements: the topic, topic sentence (general
statement), and supporting details. The main idea of any written composition is embodied
in these three elements. Hence these elements must be consistent with the topic or idea it
wants to express to understand the paragraph better.

TOPIC
The topic is the core of the paragraph and is anchored with the main idea. It usually
answers the question, "Who or what is the selection about?" or "What is the idea expressed in
the paragraph?"

GENERAL STATEMENT
The General Statement or Topic Sentence is the statement or sentence of the entire
paragraph. It is the overview of the whole composition; hence most paragraph starts with a
topic sentence.
In some cases, however, the writer provides an introductory sentence to arouse the
readers' interest, follow the topic sentence to point out the main concept, and end it with two
or three sentences to support further the idea presented. Hence, a topic sentence could also be
placed within or at the end of the paragraph.
Sometimes, a reading selection lacks a topic sentence, but it doesn't mean it has no
main idea. The main idea is hidden between the sentences; thus, the readers need to analyze
the message each sentence is trying to imply.

SUPPORTING DETAIL
The supporting details give all the necessary information to answer the WH
questions (who, what, why, where, and how). Textual evidence such as facts, data, examples,
and other specifics guide the readers to a full understanding of the written composition are
usually indicated in these sentences.

4
What's More

Have you learned anything from the discussion? Complete the following tasks, and
let's see your progress. (Use a separate sheet for your answers.)

Activity I: Plot the Sequence

Directions: The selection does not contain a topic sentence; hence you need to understand the
selection to infer its main idea.

What can a hug do? It delights. It comforts. It thrills. Who doesn’t want a warmth of a
loving hug?
Just like words, hugs speak volumes. They can mean “I miss you,” “Bye,” “I care,” “I
love you,” “It’s OK,” “I forgive,” “I’m so proud of you!”
In victory celebrations, in trying times, or in hours of bereavement, a kiss is not the
need of the hour. It is the hug that matters most.
A hug costs nothing. But it is a great gift to give on any occasion. No need to shop for
it or bother about size or length or width. All you need is to open your arms wide and wrap the
person inside them. And no matter how long or how short your arms are, hugs are always a
perfect fit. And what so nice about giving a hug? You can get one in return.
A hug goes beyond physical contact. It encompasses compassion, love, forgiveness,
and care. “A hug delights and warms, and charms that must be why God gave us arms,” so
goes the quotation.
So with arms wide open, why not go out and hug someone today? But first, here’s my
big, big, hug.

correct responses. Cite the evidence taken from the text to prove your answer. (Write your
answer on a separate sheet)

A Glass Of Milk

A poor young boy who was begging from door to door to feed his hungry stomach
decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely
young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he just asked for a glass of water; the woman

5
thought he looked hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly and
then asked, "how much do I owe you?."
"You don't owe me anything, she replied. Mother has taught us never to accept payment
for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from my heart."
Years later, that young woman became critically ill, the local doctors were battling
because they couldn't cure her, and they finally sent her to the big city, where they called
specialists to study her rare illness.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation; when he heard the town's name
where she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down the
hall of the hospital to her room. He recognized her at once.
He went back to the consultation room, determined to do his best to save her life. From
that day, he gave special attention to that case. After a long struggle, the battle was won! Dr.
Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it,
then wrote something on the bill. It was sent to her room; the woman feared opening it, for she
was sure it might take the rest of her life to pay for it all.
Finally, she looked and noticed something was written at the edge of the note, 'paid in
full with a glass of milk.' Tears filled her eyes as she immediately remembered.

QUESTION RESPONSE TEXT

EVIDENCE
1. What is the message of the selection?
2. Who is Dr. Howard Kelly?
3. Who paid the hospital bill?
4. What does the last sentence of the selection imply?
5. Predict the outcome or the end of the selection.
6. What does the word "begging" means in the first
sentence?

What I Have Learned

The following activities sum up the content of this module. Explanation after each
activity is also provided for further clarification.

Yesterday was my birthday. When I woke up, I noticed my brother Jun hung up a big
sign that said, “Happy Birthday, Joey!” Mom made a spaghetti for dinner. It’s my favorite
food in the whole world. My friend David came over and handed me a wrapped gift. I
wondered what it was. It was a new basketball! I had a great day.

1. Copy this short selection in your answer sheet and encircle the general statement and
underline the supporting details.
What is the main idea of the selection? If your answer is "birthday celebration," then
you're correct. The first sentence, "Yesterday was my birthday," points to the selection's
content, which is a birthday celebration. Similarly, all other sentences (supporting details)
describe the event.

6
2. The following paragraph is faulty because the sentences numbered 1 to 6 are not arranged
in the proper order, and one sentence should not be included. Read the paragraph and
answer the questions below. (Use separate sheet for your answer)

(1) The fire trucks came out of the firehouse. (2) There was a fire on our
block. (3) The trucks finally arrived, and the firemen put out the fire. (4) A dog
barked loudly as we approached. (5) Someone turned in the alarm at once. (6) As
one truck was turning a corner on the way to the fire, it skidded into an automobile.

a. Which sentence should be the first one in the paragraph?

b. Which sentence should be the second? The third? And the fourth?
c. Which sentence should be the last one in the paragraph?
d. Do you think the sentence "A dog barked loudly as we approached." should be
included in the selection? Why?

Remember that a paragraph is a series of related sentences that develop into a single
topic or main idea. These sentences should be consistent with the ideas or topic presented in
the selection. Any unrelated sentence will inhibit the readers' comprehension.

The correct sequence of this paragraph is 2, 5, 1, 6, and 3. The first sentence of "There
was a fire on our block." tells the event, and other details, except for number 4, describe the
event. The sentence "A dog barked loudly as we approached." does not contribute any idea
about the paragraph; hence, it should be left out from the selection.
