Communication skills are abilities you use when giving and receiving
different kinds of information. While these skills may be a regular part of your day-
to-day life, communicating in a clear, effective and efficient way is an extremely

are essential to allow others and yourself to understand information more accurately
and quickly.

In contrast, poor communication skills lead to frequent misunderstanding

Listening Text:

The Big Bang Theory

Man: So, first there was a play station – a.k.a. PS 1. Then, PS2, PS3 and now PS4 and
that makes sense. You’d think after Xbox there’d be Xbox2 but no, next came Xbox
360. Hmm, and now, after 360, comes Xbox one. Why one? Maybe that’s how many
seconds of thought they put into naming it.
Woman: Can you get the butter please?
Man: You know, however, with the Xbox one, I can control my entire entertainment
system using voice commands. Up until now, I’ve had to use Leonard.
Woman: Then, get the other one. Pass the butter.
Man: Get… Hang on! I don’t feel like you’re taking this dilemma seriously.
Woman: Fine, Sheldon. You have my undivided attention.
Man: Okay, now, the PS4 is more angular and sleek looking.
Woman: No way!
Man: It’s true! But the larger size of the Xbox one may keep it from overheating.
Woman: You wouldn’t want your gaming system to overheat.
Man: No, see? You absolutely would not! And furthermore, the Xbox one now comes
with a Kinect included/
Woman: Included?
Man: Yes! Not sold separately. Although, the PS4 uses cool new GODR5 RAM while the
Xbox one is still using the conventional DDR3 memory.
Woman: Why would they still be using DDR3? Are they nuts?!
Man: See, that’s what I thought! But then, they go in and throw in an ESRAM buffer.
Woman: Whoa! Wait a second. Who’s they?
Man: The Xbox.
Woman: You’re kidding!
Man: No, I am not! And this ESRAM buffer should totally bridge the 100-gigabit-per-
second bandwidth gap between the two RAM types.
Woman: This is a nightmare! How will you ever make a decision?!
Man: You see?! I don’t know! What should I do?
Woman: Please pass the butter!

What is It

Whenever you are involved in a conversation, dialogue, or interview, you

are engaged in interpersonal communication. When two people get together to
exchange ideas, they are applying the basic communication process.

The term communication process refers to the exchange of information or

a message between two or more people. For communication to succeed, both
parties must be able to exchange information and understand each other. If the
flow of information is blocked for some reasons, then communication fails.

Interpersonal communication often includes face-to-face and online exchange

of messages which may be in a form of a certain tone of voice, facial expressions,
body language and gestures. It is important to learn better interpersonal
communication skills because it is the basis of both personal and professional
relationships. Knowing how to communicate to a wide variety of people can
greatly improve one’s social interaction and career pathways.

Types of Interpersonal Communication

1. Conversation
A conversation is a type of dyadic communication which is an informal
talk between individuals. Its nature is less purposive, serious and
intimate than any other type of dyadic communication. This is a form
of social entertainment. A good conversation is characterized by Eson
et.al (1979) as worthwhile, informal, flexible, relaxing and interesting.

2. Dialogue
A dialogue is a kind of communication that gives clear meaning to the
two parties involved in spite of some obstacles. Through a dialogue,
the most intimate and personal relationship is formed. The truth itself
of the speaker is entrusted to one another with confidence. This is an
avenue for one to enhance humanness. An effective dialogue comes
up with a good listening habit collaborated with an appropriate
response.

6
3. Interview
An interview is a type of dyadic communication that requires questions and
answers. Since this is intentional and purposive, an accomplishment is always
expected. Usually, a person who knows much about a subject is the one we
interview.

Interpersonal communication consists of verbal and nonverbal

communication. People often exchange information and feelings through face-
to-face communication. Most of us focus on words we listen to. But interpersonal
communication is less about what’s said and more about how it’s said.

It’s not only your words but also the tone of your voice, facial expressions,
and body language that powerfully express your thoughts and emotions. Here
are some strategies for effective interpersonal communication that you can do
for successful communication to happen.

Strategies for Effective Interpersonal Communication

Non-Verbal behavior

 Look at the person – use eye contact

 Smile and nod in agreement
 Use open, positive posture
 Display interest
 Be aware of own body language

Acceptance

 Suspend judgement – listen with unbiased

and open mind
 Focus of attention on listener, not on your
ideas or opinions
 Allow people time to think

Understanding

 Use probing in a helpful way to follow up

 Paraphrase and summarize to let the listener
know you are listening and to give them a
chance to correct misunderstandings

that the higher quality loaves should go for 50 pesos and the other
ones for 30 pesos. All morning many customers came in to buy
