Lesson
1 Speech Delivery
What will be your reaction if you are just attending a
debutante party and then suddenly you will be called to
speak something to the celebrant? How about being
called in the class to participate but you failed to read the
lesson in advance, or worse, you are selected to be the
representative of your section in the upcoming English
Festival of Talent? These are just few of the many
possible situations that will test your self-confidence and
speaking skills. If you are not prepared, how well will you
handle such unexpected circumstances?

The scenarios listed above are most common especially to those students like you. There are
times when you are called to speak before a crowd and if you are not get used to it, you will
surely struggle in delivering a message. Speaking fright is not a new a thing among students.
When they are called to participate in the class, though some are able to stand and speak
their thoughts, most struggle to their feet. In order to address these, one has to master their
speaking abilities in order to deliver the message with ease and confidence.

Notes to the Teacher

You may present here additional utterances which express two or more
acts at once. You may also ask the students to create their own examples
based on their experiences. List those experiences and share the
intentions of those utterances

Speech Delivery and Its Types

According to prezi.com, speech delivery is a matter of nonverbal communication which is

the expression of the message using one’s voice and body (Speech Delivery, 2020). This
means that speech delviery is not just a mere speaking activity using the speech organs
but also a complex process of employing the necessary non-verbal cues so as to convey
the message appropriately. One can be a good speaker but only few can be effective ones.
If you wish to deliver speech as effective as possible, you must be proficient in using both
verbal and non-verbal sppech components.,

Depending on the situation you are in, the type of speech delivery matters. There are four
known modes of speech delivery based on how they are prepared and to whom they are
presented to. Refer to the table below for reference.

Table 1. Types of Speech Delivery

Can you think of other situation/occasion which involve/s any of those types of speech
delivery?
Let’s Practice It!
1. Choose any portion of this module to read. Just pick the shortest one (with at least 3-5
sentences). Using the camera of your phone, take a video of you reading your chosen text.
2. Now that you are done with the first one, you are ready to take something challenging.
This time, please memorize the lines below. Use your phone and take a video of you
speaking the lines without using any copy. Be sure to maintain eye contact.
I will because I can.
I will try my best to do what I can.
So, I can do my best to do my will.
It is because I can that I will do it.
And I can always do what I will.
I will because I can.
I can because I will.
3. Once you are done with the two videos, send the two videos to our GC in OCC.

7
Let’s Conceptualize It!

In order to graphically present the concepts, you previously learned, complete the concept
map below by supplying the necessary details. Use the terms in Principles of Speech
Delivery.

8
Activity 1.1 Speech Delivery and Its Types
Read the following situations below and determine what mode of speech delivery is
manifested or is most suited to convey the message by writing impromptu, extemporaneous,
manuscript or memorized on the given blanks.

MEMORIZED 1. To act naturally on camera, Amelia reads the script every

night for a week so that she will look natural when acting. When the
filming started; she was applauded by the cast for her prowess in
acting as if she was really in the real-life setting.
MANUSCRIPT 2. Given with an hour of talk, the President has delivered effectively
his speech that was carefully made by her secretary
IMPROMPTU 3. Since Greg failed to listen to the discussion, he was not able
to answer the question thrown to him by his teacher.
EXTEMPORANEOUS4.Since elementary, Allysa has been joining pageants and luckily, she
always bags the title because of her ability to answer the question
with grace under pressure.
MANUSCRIPT 5. The head of the faculty reads in verbatim the new memo on
misconduct and behavior to the rest of the faculty members.

Activity 1.2 Principle of Speech Delivery

Read the following situations and analyze carefully what principle of speech delivery is lacking
or absent in the speaker by writing the articulation, modulation, stage presence and audience
rapport on the given space.

MODULATION 1. During the storytelling activity in their English class, Micah was
applauded by her teacher because of her voice. When she was
representing the whole class in the section level, she used the same
voice (the one in their English class) inside the theater of which the
judges were not able to hear her. As a result, she never made it to the
finals.
ARTICULATION 2. There was a miscommunication between Steph and Claire because
Steph said “It was an allusion to the bible” but Claire hears “It was an
illusion to the bible”. Claire being a religious person feels offended of
what Steph said which was actually not what she meant after all.
AUDIENCE RAPPORT3. During the Commencement Exercise in one of the schools in the
barangay, the guest speaker plainly reads the manuscript of his speech
before the audience without even checking them if they were listening.
Most of them clapped happily when the guest was done.
STAGE PRESENCE 4. Despite having no podium on the stage, Mark stands still in one
area while speaking to the audience as if his action is limited.
ARTICULATION 5. In the class, Mrs. Reyes is often imitated by her students the way
she speaks which is always high-pitch from the beginning of the
discussion until the end.

9
Please complete the bullets of learning below by supplying the needed information:

• I have learned that there are four _________ of speech delivery and these are
___________, ___________, manuscript and _______________.

• I have learned that there are four principles of ____________ and these are
audience rapport, ______________, ____________, and _______________.

• I have learned audience rapport is also known as _____________________.

• I have learned that answering a question thrown by a teacher to a student

exemplifies ______________ type of speech delivery.

• I have learned that __________ refers to how the speaker acts/does while on stage
speaking.

Now that you are done completing the bullets of learning above, you are now ready to have
your own bullets of learning. List down at least five insights you take from the lesson.

A. Please watch again the two YouTube videos you have previously watched. Since you
already have learned speech delivery, its types, and principles, you are also ready to
