II. Content / Topic Data Collection through an Interview
2
In order to clear your mind on what are the goals of
this module, we have to set our objectives. This module seeks
to provide information on how to collect data through an
interview. Specifically, it seeks to attain the following:
1. To define interview as a method in data collection;
2. To identify the processes in data collection through an
interview; and
3. To collect data through an interview.
Introduction
Research serves as contributor to the body of knowledge. A phenomenon
will never be addressed not until a research will be conducted and materialized.
Basically, a research is done in order to answer the existing questions and
inexplainable problems.
According to Shodhganga (2016), it is a “process of collecting, analyzing and
interpreting information to answer questions.” Then, research becomes impossible
without the aid of data gathering procedures. There are several methods to conduct
a research and one of them is an interview.
An interview serves as an important method in collecting data in a research
study since information are taken first hand and directly from the respondents. If the
interview is done appropriately, it is ensured that most probably the data gathered
are valid and authentic. The validity and authenticity of data yield most favorable
results to the research study conducted.

Let Us Talk!
Instruction: Read the conversation between Juan and Maria. Please take note
on how Juan and Maria exchange ideas. Guide questions will follow after this
activity.
CONVERSATION:
JUAN: You look lonely, Maria. How are you feeling today?
MARIA: I am not feeling good lately, Juan.
JUAN: But, why?
MARIA: I lost my job. The restaurant I’m working in closes due to the quarantine in
the city. There are no customers dining in. There would be no income.
JUAN: That’s sad to know.
MARIA: It’s been a month and I can’t pay my bills any longer.
JUAN: How about asking your family to help you pay your bills?
MARIA: I don’t have anyone here in the city. They are in the province.
JUAN: So, what’s your plan then?
MARIA: I don’t know yet.
JUAN: Oh! That’s sad. Don’t you worry, everything will pass. God is good.

Processes in Data Collection through an Interview
Data collection through an interview can be done in various processes and
steps. Ahmad (2012) and Fox (2000) argue that these steps are included before,
during and after the interview.
