4. How do we call them?
5. What are the two spoken forms of language used by people in everyday
speech?
6. What is the difference between these two forms of expressions?

What Is It

What you need to know…

Colloquial language is used in everyday speech. This presents a neutral tone, not
so much informal or formal. This is the level used in ordinary conversations, like in
speaking with classmates, teachers, visitors etc.

Familiar language reflects the close relationship of the people speaking. The
intimacy is observed in the use of details and personal references in speech.

Slang is a sub-category of colloquial expressions. It refers to words, phrases and

uses of language that are considered to be very informal and the usage is often
restricted to special contexts or is only used by a particular class, profession, social
group, etc. Some forms of slang include abusive, offensive or vulgar language and

4
'taboo' words. Most slang expressions are spoken, not written and would be
considered inappropriate in formal types of communication.
Analogy is a pair of terms that has common relationship. In most cases, you will
not only determine the common relationship between each pair but you will also
have to identify which term makes up each pair. Usually, you are given two terms
in the format A : B, which could be read as A related to B (Barbacena, et. al., 2010).

Example:

(A) : (B)
kitchen : house - Kitchen and House are related since kitchen

is part of the house.

Writers use analogy to connect unfamiliar words or new ideas with common
and familiar objects. It functions as description or explanation of one thing by
examining its similarities and differences and forces the reader to understand the
connection between them. Using this technique, vocabulary skills as well as speed
In reading comprehension are enhanced.

Different kinds of analogies:

 Part to Whole Analogies: where a part of something is compared to the
whole part of something.
o Example:
- Foot is to leg as hand is to arm.
- Violin is to string as clarinet is to reed.
 Synonym Analogies: words that are the same or very similar in
meaning.
o Example:
- courageous : brave
- slender : thin
 Antonym Analogies: words that are opposite in meaning.
o Example:
- asleep : awake
- happy : sad
 Cause and Effect Analogies: the cause will make something happen,
and the effect will be the result of the cause occurring.
o Example:
- smoking : lung cancer
- raining : flood
 Person and Situation Analogies: the person is associated or related to
the object or the location.
o Example:
- baker : bread
teacher : school

5
