CRITICAL LISTENING: ANALYTICAL

SUMMARY:
Analytical listening is a way of listening to an audio composition whereby the meaning of
the sounds interpreted. There are two approaches to develop analytical skills. One is the TQLR
technique and the other is the Sectional Approach. TQLR is four step listening strategy where the
students tune in the topic, raise questions about it, listen the text with the questions in mind and
respond to what they picked up from it. The Sectional approach was to highlight the overall
macro discourse pattern of the text and in this particular instance it was the problem-situation
macro disease pattern.

REFLECTION:
As an English Teacher, I think TQLR technique is a comprehensive approach to teaching
because we allow our students to engage with the lessons and encourage them to think creatively
and critically. We’re in a higher position to instill confidence in our students as we teach and
interact with them every day so that they are ready to face the real battle outside the four corners
of the classroom. I think this method is very useful during class hour and very applicable to our
daily life.
